Meta Platforms is grappling with mounting regulatory pressure, particularly concerning the access of underage users to its social media platforms. The company recently disclosed the removal of over 750,000 accounts belonging to Australian users under the age of 16, a direct response to new nationwide restrictions. This action underscores Meta's commitment to compliance, yet also brings into focus the ongoing challenges it faces in balancing user engagement with robust regulatory oversight, particularly amidst substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure and a fluctuating financial landscape.

In response to an Australian mandate prohibiting social media use for individuals under 16, which commenced on December 10, Meta Platforms has proactively eliminated a significant number of accounts. Specifically, the tech giant reported on August 13 that it had taken down 462,000 Instagram accounts and 294,000 Facebook accounts between December and June. This figure represents a considerable increase from earlier reports and comes as Australia's internet watchdog considers legal action against platforms deemed non-compliant. Meta emphasizes its use of AI to detect underage users through contextual clues like birthday mentions or school grades, claiming continuous improvement in enforcement mechanisms.

Despite these regulatory hurdles, Meta's financial strength, primarily driven by its robust advertising division, provides a buffer. The company generated $114 billion in advertising revenue in the first half of 2026, constituting nearly 98% of its total sales. Analysts project an impressive 21.6% annualized growth in this sector through 2028. This substantial revenue stream enables Meta to allocate considerable resources towards regulatory compliance and strategic future endeavors, such as advanced AI development. The integration of AI technologies is directly enhancing advertising efficiency, with automated tools like Advantage+ already achieving an annual run rate of $75 billion, demonstrating a clear return on infrastructure investments.

However, Meta's operational environment is not without its difficulties. The Australian situation exemplifies the escalating regulatory scrutiny, with lawmakers doubling non-compliance penalties to A$99 million and granting regulators expanded investigative powers. Furthermore, government data indicates that a high percentage of underage individuals continued to access social media despite the ban's initial implementation, suggesting the enforcement measures have a long road ahead. Financially, Meta experienced a significant 91% year-over-year decline in free cash flow last quarter, primarily due to a $30 billion expenditure on AI infrastructure. This widening gap between capital expenditures and profitability raises concerns about the potential need for debt financing to sustain its ambitious AI projects, a path already taken by industry peers like Amazon and Alphabet. The company's stock performance has also lagged, with an 11% decline in 2026 and underperformance against the S&P 500 over the past five years.

From an investor perspective, hedge fund ownership of Meta has shown a modest increase, indicating cautious optimism rather than widespread skepticism, with short interest remaining low. The stock's current forward price-to-earnings ratio of 19.88 suggests market expectations of stable growth, largely without fully factoring in the potential impact of ongoing regulatory challenges. For investors, the critical question remains whether Meta's advertising revenue growth and emerging income streams, such as AI computing sales, can consistently outpace its increasing operational costs and regulatory burdens.
