For decades, large sedans and SUVs dominated the luxury transport scene, particularly in bustling urban centers. However, Mercedes-Benz is now spearheading a significant shift with its VLE-Class van, an electric marvel crafted specifically for the discerning VIP car service market. This new vehicle marks a departure from traditional luxury models, promising a more refined and adaptable solution for modern metropolitan demands.

Unmatched Comfort: A Private Jet on Wheels

Unlike previous commercial vans repurposed for luxury, the VLE-Class is engineered from the ground up with passenger comfort as its paramount focus. While capable of seating up to eight with bench configurations, the true essence of its 'private jet on wheels' experience shines in its two/two/two seating arrangement. Every seat is meticulously designed for an opulent journey, with thoughtful considerations even extending to driver's seat adjustments to prioritize passenger spaciousness in the Exclusive trim.

Seamless Urban Navigation with Advanced Features

The VLE-Class boasts practical features like dual power-sliding side doors with roll-down windows, operable by passengers, the driver, or remotely via an app. This design ensures effortless entry and exit, particularly in constricted city environments. Inside, the MBUX Rear Space Experience is a standout, featuring a 31.3-inch panoramic ceiling screen paired with a Burmester audio system and Dolby Atmos sound, creating an immersive cinematic atmosphere for all occupants, available even on the base model.

Powerful and Efficient Electric Powertrains

Propelling the VLE-Class are two electric powertrain options: the VLE300 with a 272-hp front-wheel-drive motor, and the VLE400, offering all-wheel drive with a combined 413 horsepower from its dual motors. Both variants feature an 800-volt architecture and a 115 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery, capable of adding an impressive 220 miles of range in just 15 minutes with a 300-kW DC fast-charger. These specifications ensure both robust performance and long-distance capability.

Agile Handling in Tight Cityscapes

Despite its luxurious size, the VLE-Class excels in urban maneuverability, thanks to its seven degrees of rear-wheel steering. This innovative feature gives it a remarkably tight turning radius of just 35.7 feet (for Euro models), significantly outperforming larger SUVs like the Chevrolet Suburban. The U.S. market will receive a slightly longer wheelbase version with a 37.5-foot turning circle, still offering exceptional agility. The vehicle is further enhanced with ten external cameras, five radar sensors, and 12 ultrasonic sensors, providing comprehensive awareness and driver assistance, including a highly effective "Reverse Maneuvering Function" that can retrace the last 490 feet of travel.

Optimized for Highway Serenity and Energy Efficiency

Beyond the city, the VLE-Class delivers a serene highway experience. The dual-motor version offers ample power, and the cabin remains remarkably quiet, facilitating easy conversation. While the air suspension provides a smooth ride at lower speeds, minor pavement imperfections might be perceptible at higher velocities, a small trade-off for its initial soft tuning. Mercedes projects a range of approximately 343 EPA miles, backed by an impressive demonstrated efficiency of 14.8 kWh per 100 kilometers in a challenging real-world test.

Global Ambitions: The VLE-Class's Market Rollout

The VLE-Class is slated for a U.S. launch in the latter half of 2027, with Mercedes-Benz anticipating a strong market response. While European sales are expected to be predominantly commercial, the U.S. market's mix between commercial and personal use remains an open question. Mercedes aims to adapt its offerings based on customer feedback post-launch, with an emphasis on luxurious variants and potential customization options from Manufaktur. A Maybach version is even being considered, highlighting the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of luxury in this new segment.
