Memory Price Hike Continues to Impact Gaming PC Market and Valve's Steam Machine
The market for gaming personal computers is currently experiencing a significant surge in component costs, particularly for memory. Yazan Aldehayyat, an engineer at Valve, noted that the current retail availability of memory products lags behind bulk supply observations by several months. He emphasized that the situation continues to deteriorate, with prices showing no immediate signs of stabilizing or decreasing, suggesting a persistent upward trend in the short to medium term.
This ongoing memory shortage significantly affected the initial launch of the Steam Machine. Valve’s engineer, Pierre-Loup Griffais, acknowledged that the production of Steam Machines was constrained by the limited availability of memory. Despite these challenges, Valve maintains that the success of the Steam Machine should not be measured solely by sales figures. Instead, the company views its achievement in offering a viable open-source PC gaming solution for home entertainment. Valve remains committed to the future development of the device, assuring users that machines are being delivered and that extensive work will continue for years to come, irrespective of current supply chain difficulties. They also stated their preference for offering the entire PC game catalog rather than launching an exclusive title with new hardware.
