Recent reports indicate that Meghan Markle's prospective involvement in Guy Ritchie's Netflix series, 'The Gentlemen,' has been canceled. This decision reportedly stems from significant public opposition in the United Kingdom, casting a shadow on the Duchess of Sussex's aspirations for an acting comeback. The situation unfolds after previous discussions about her joining the series, which was believed to be a contributing factor to her and Prince Harry's potential relocation to the U.K.

The news was brought to light by Tina Brown, a respected journalist and former editor-in-chief of prominent publications like Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. In a Substack column published on a Saturday, Brown disclosed that the casting of Meghan Markle for the third season of 'The Gentlemen' had been retracted. She emphasized that the intense negative reaction from the British public made it unfeasible to proceed with her role, suggesting that this incident could hinder Markle's future acting endeavors in the U.K.

Prior to this development, The Hollywood Reporter had learned that the Duchess of Sussex was in advanced negotiations to join the Netflix show, which is filmed in the U.K. Her character was being specifically developed for the third season, though the series itself had not yet received an official renewal. Guy Ritchie, the creator of 'The Gentlemen,' an adaptation of his 2019 film, was reportedly introduced to Markle through mutual acquaintances. Netflix has not issued a comment regarding these reports.

Markle's potential role would have marked her return to acting since she put her career on hold in 2017 following her engagement to Prince Harry. The couple had recently announced their intention to move back to the U.K., with Brown indicating that this acting opportunity played a significant part in their decision-making process. The couple also has an existing relationship with Netflix, having signed a comprehensive deal with the streaming giant after their move to California in 2020. This partnership led to several documentary series, including 'Harry & Meghan,' 'Polo,' and 'With Love, Meghan.' Their deal was subsequently revised to a first-look agreement last year, and earlier this year, Netflix decided to discontinue Markle's lifestyle brand.

The reported withdrawal of Meghan Markle from 'The Gentlemen' underscores the complexities and public scrutiny that often accompany the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's professional and personal decisions. The strong public sentiment in the U.K. appears to have played a decisive role in this casting change, raising questions about the feasibility of high-profile acting roles for Markle in the current climate. This event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by public figures in balancing their careers with public perception and expectations.
