McLaren Unveils Limited-Edition 788HS: Enhanced Performance and Aerodynamics
McLaren has recently unveiled its latest high-performance offering, the 788HS, a special edition derivative of the renowned 750S. This exclusive model, limited to only 200 units worldwide, represents a significant step forward in power and aerodynamic sophistication within McLaren's line of mid-engine V-8 supercars. Building on a heritage that began with the 720S in 2017, the 788HS pushes the boundaries of performance with enhanced engine output and advanced track-focused features, ensuring it stands as a pinnacle of automotive engineering and exclusivity.
The new 788HS is powered by a recalibrated twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, now delivering an impressive 777 horsepower, marking a 37 horsepower increase over the standard 750S. This power upgrade translates to 788 PS, which is reflected in the car's nomenclature. Despite the power boost, the torque remains at 590 pound-feet, while McLaren has managed to reduce the dry weight to 2789 pounds, making it slightly lighter than the 750S. This combination of increased power and reduced weight contributes to its blistering acceleration, with McLaren claiming a 0-60 mph sprint in just 2.8 seconds and a 0-124 mph time of 7.0 seconds. The vehicle's top speed is rated at 205 mph, and a refined engine-mount calibration aims to intensify the connection between the driver and powertrain, further enhanced by a new quad-exit titanium exhaust system for a more engaging auditory experience.
Aerodynamic advancements are a key highlight of the 788HS, with a suite of carbon-fiber components designed to optimize downforce. A novel S-duct in the hood channels air efficiently over the cabin, directing it towards a large, raised active rear wing. Complementing this, a sharper front splitter and a redesigned diffuser, drawing inspiration from McLaren's Formula 1 expertise, work in unison to provide 10 percent more downforce compared to the 765LT. The suspension system, featuring McLaren's unique hydraulic diagonal connections instead of traditional anti-roll bars, has been fine-tuned for the 788HS, and the car sits 0.2 inches lower at the front. Braking performance is significantly improved with carbon-ceramic discs, borrowed from the McLaren Senna, paired with six-piston forged aluminum monoblock front calipers. For the first time in the 720S lineage, the 788HS features center-lock wheels, underscoring its track-ready credentials.
Inside, the cabin retains most of its familiar layout but introduces bespoke touches to signify its exclusivity. A new carbon-fiber center console, seats with a distinctive perforation pattern, and unique HS badges, along with 788HS logos embroidered into the headrests, distinguish this limited edition. A special plaque within the car denotes its production number and its place in McLaren's history. With only 100 coupes and 100 Spider convertibles slated for production, each customized by McLaren Special Operations, the 788HS will be a rare collector's item. While pricing details have not been released, it is anticipated to significantly exceed the 750S's cost, reflecting its enhanced performance and limited availability. McLaren describes the 788HS as the definitive and final evolution of the acclaimed supercar lineage that commenced with the 720S, with a successor to the 750S expected around 2028, potentially bringing substantial innovations following McLaren's merger with Forseven and acquisition by CYVN Holdings.
