Mariana Rondón's 'Looking for Sam' Secures Martfilms Backing
Mexican film company Martfilms has announced its collaboration on "Looking for Sam," a new feature by Mariana Rondón, celebrated director of the award-winning "Bad Hair" ("Pelo malo"). This upcoming film, a unique blend of documentary and fiction, will be presented at the prestigious San Sebastian's Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum. It reunites Rondón with the lead performers from her 2013 Golden Shell laureate, "Bad Hair": Sam Lange, who portrayed the child Junior, and Samantha Castillo, who played his mother, both of whom later emigrated from Venezuela.
Rondón describes "Looking for Sam" as an exploration of the fluid boundaries between fact and imagination, where individual recollections and self-perception are constantly reshaped. Her producing partner, Marite Ugás of Sudaca Films, further elaborates that the film tackles various forms of transitions – geographical, temporal, physical, and personal – emphasizing that the search for Sam extends beyond a mere person to a deeper quest for self-discovery in the aftermath of displacement. The narrative highlights Lange's journey to Paris, where he established a modeling career, and Castillo's relocation to Mexico, illustrating the profound impacts of migration on identity.
Martfilms' Martha Orozco expressed enthusiasm for the long-awaited partnership, noting a shared cinematic vision that has frequently brought their work into proximity. Orozco views "Bad Hair" as a groundbreaking work that courageously tackled issues like prejudice, homophobia, and social division within Latin American cinema, inspiring a belief in resilient storytelling. She anticipates that "Looking for Sam" will be a significant and emotional reunion, reflecting changes in their home country, the growth of its protagonists, and the artistic evolution of Rondón and Ugás. Meanwhile, Sudaca Films has secured a six-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, starting this December, to further develop the screenplay and engage with Lange, who resides there. This residency underscores the project's international scope and the importance of finding French collaborators at the Co-production Forum.
