The eagerly awaited film adaptation of Aravind Adiga's novel, 'Last Man in Tower,' starring Manoj Bajpayee, is gearing up for its Indian theatrical debut in September. This project marks a significant collaboration between celebrated actors Bajpayee and Boman Irani, who share the screen for the very first time. The movie, helmed by director Ben Rekhi and produced by Rana Daggubati's Spirit Media, promises a profound narrative that delves into themes of individual defiance and communal resilience, as hinted by its recently released teaser.

'Last Man in Tower' to Grace Indian Screens This September

The film 'Last Man in Tower,' based on the acclaimed novel by Booker Prize-winning author Aravind Adiga, is slated for a September 11 release in Indian cinemas. Directed by Ben Rekhi, the screenplay was meticulously crafted by Sooni Taraporevala, with Hindi dialogues penned by Juhi Chaturvedi. The movie boasts a stellar cast led by the eminent Manoj Bajpayee and Boman Irani, marking their inaugural on-screen partnership. Divya Dutta also plays a pivotal role, adding emotional depth to the ensemble, alongside Sukant Goel.

The story centers on Masterji, a retired schoolteacher whose steadfast refusal to conform to societal pressures creates friction within his community. His quiet act of defiance sends ripples through his surroundings, forcing neighbors, including Mrs. Puri, to confront their own choices and compromises as an impending change challenges their values. Director Ben Rekhi expressed his deep satisfaction with the project, praising the exceptional performances of Bajpayee and Irani, and highlighting Divya Dutta's profound contribution to the film's emotional core. He emphasized that 'Last Man in Tower' is a timely story about preserving community and family amidst tumultuous times, a narrative that has only grown more relevant.

For Rana Daggubati's Hyderabad-based production house, Spirit Media, founded in 2005, 'Last Man in Tower' signifies a major milestone as their maiden Hindi feature film. Daggubati described the story as deeply human, resonating with universal themes found within the lives of a very specific group of people. He was particularly drawn to its exploration of the choices individuals make and the values they uphold. The film's musical score is composed by Govind Vasantha, with cinematography by Rangarajan Ramabadran. Guneet Dogra and Pratiksha Rao serve as additional producers. A Los Angeles-based director, Rekhi's previous works include the SXSW Audience Award-winning 'Waterborne' and 'Watch List,' the latter garnering 11 nominations at the Filipino Oscars. His documentary short 'The Breakthrough Group' was also recognized for the 2026 Academy Awards.

This film offers a powerful reflection on human nature and the societal structures that shape our decisions. The coming together of such a talented cast and crew under a compelling narrative suggests a cinematic experience that will not only entertain but also provoke thought about our interconnectedness and the courage to stand firm in one's beliefs, even when faced with communal opposition. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling to illuminate the complexities of human relationships and the enduring spirit of resistance.
