A new "Secret Lair" collection for the popular trading card game "Magic: The Gathering" is on its way, featuring exciting crossovers with "KPop Demon Hunters," Marvel, and Jim Henson's classic film "Labyrinth." This announcement comes nearly a year after Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks hinted at a "KPop Demon Hunters" collaboration, emphasizing Magic's ability to incorporate various intellectual properties successfully. The upcoming "Corn Maze" Superdrop is scheduled for release on October 12th, promising a unique blend of fan-favorite franchises within the Magic universe.

Anticipated 'Corn Maze' Superdrop Details Emerge

The official "Secret Lair" social media accounts recently teased the upcoming "Corn Maze" Superdrop, revealing its October 12th launch date. The teaser images, depicting a mysterious corn maze at night adorned with various objects, suggest a Halloween-themed release. Hidden within the visuals, copyright and trademark notices explicitly name Marvel, "KPop Demon Hunters," and Jim Henson's "Labyrinth," confirming that each property will receive its own dedicated collection. One particularly notable clue is a magpie donning a traditional Korean gat, strongly hinting at the character Sussie from "KPop Demon Hunters," a demonic bird companion to the tiger Derpy, who eventually comes under Rumi's care in the film.

Hasbro's CEO, Chris Cocks, previously highlighted "Magic's" versatility in accommodating a wide range of intellectual properties, citing the success of the "SpongeBob SquarePants" Secret Lair as an example. He expressed confidence that if "Magic" could excite fans with "SpongeBob" collectible cards, it could certainly do so with major film properties. While a Marvel collaboration is not unexpected, given the ongoing partnership that includes releases like "Marvel's Spider-Man" and "Marvel Super Heroes," the specific Drops are likely to lean into horror themes, potentially featuring elements like "Marvel Zombies."

The inclusion of Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" is specifically tied to Labyrinth Enterprises, the entity holding rights to the 1986 movie. Teaser elements, such as a clock within the maze, are believed to reference the film's plot point of Sarah having 13 hours to rescue Toby. Additionally, a prominent hand in one image is almost certainly that of David Bowie's Goblin King, Jareth, holding his iconic crystal balls. Historically, October has been a significant month for large-scale Secret Lair releases, with the October 2022 Superdrop featuring eleven distinct Drops. This suggests that the upcoming "Corn Maze" Superdrop could offer multiple unique cards for each featured property, with fans particularly hoping for mechanically distinct cards for characters like Huntr/x and the Saja Boys from "KPop Demon Hunters."

The continuous integration of diverse franchises into "Magic: The Gathering" demonstrates the game's evolving appeal and its potential to captivate a broader audience. This strategy not only revitalizes existing fan bases but also introduces new players to the intricate world of Magic through familiar characters and narratives. Such collaborations underscore the adaptability of the trading card game format and its capacity to transcend traditional genre boundaries, fostering a vibrant and dynamic community around popular culture phenomena.
