Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair Unveils First-Ever Randomized Booster Packs with MSCHF Collaboration

A new collaboration between Magic: The Gathering's Secret Lair and the Brooklyn art collective MSCHF is introducing the first-ever randomized booster packs to the Secret Lair series. The "Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set" draws inspiration from the rudimentary, handcrafted cards used during Magic's initial playtesting phases over three decades ago. Instead of pre-selected card sets, enthusiasts can now acquire sealed envelopes, each containing seven randomized cards, for $19.92.

During an exclusive interview, Secret Lair's art director, Jacob Covey, alongside MSCHF designers Niek Dekker and Kevin Wiesner, shared insights into how this tribute to Magic's humble beginnings evolved into Secret Lair's groundbreaking venture into randomized booster packs. Each Zeta Booster includes a mix of three commons, two uncommons, one rare or mythic rare, and a single wildcard of any rarity. The release, priced to reflect the game's 1992 origins, will be available through Secret Lair's Chaos Vault starting September 2nd at 12 p.m. ET, with a limit of 12 boosters per customer while supplies last.

The Zeta Set faithfully captures the DIY spirit of early Magic prototypes through its use of public domain images, archival content, bespoke MSCHF photography, and a typography style reminiscent of antiquated word processors. This collection of 121 cards encompasses both foundational Magic classics and contemporary Commander favorites, presented in three distinct visual styles: Photocopy, Photocopy Negative, and Color Banding. These treatments evoke the imperfections of early printing and reproduction, such as inverted images from old Xerox machines or the color distortions of a faulty printer, creating a uniquely unfinished aesthetic. Some cards feature playful and unconventional imagery, like a baby swan on "Arcane Signet" or a prosthetic elf ear on "Llanowar Elves," reflecting the whimsical nature often found in the game's original test cards. The art team consciously embraced this broad artistic freedom, leading to a diverse collection of images that prioritize creativity over strict thematic coherence, ultimately resulting in a vibrant and engaging set for players and collectors alike.

This innovative approach not only celebrates Magic's rich history but also pushes the boundaries of what a card release can be, proving that creativity and a sense of fun can breathe new life into established traditions while fostering a positive and enthusiastic community.
