Layoffs Loom at Electronic Arts as Saudi Investment Fund Takes Control

Electronic Arts (EA) has recently been acquired by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, alongside Silver Lake and Affinity Partners. This change in ownership is anticipated to lead to substantial workforce reductions, echoing a concerning pattern seen across the gaming industry following large-scale corporate takeovers. The move has prompted widespread discussion about job security within the sector, particularly in light of EA's considerable new debt obligations.

Bloomberg's Jason Schreier highlighted on Bluesky that EA's shift to private status means it will no longer trade on NASDAQ, ending a 36-year public presence. Shareholders, including numerous employees, are expected to receive $210 per share. However, this transition comes with a hefty price tag: EA will incur $18 billion in debt, necessitating annual interest payments of approximately $1.8 billion. While EA's annual EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) hovers around $1.5 billion, which should cover the interest, the company has reportedly informed debt investors of plans to cut $700 million in annual costs. A significant portion of this, $170 million, is attributed to "organizational efficiencies," which typically signals impending mass layoffs.

This situation, while predictable, underscores a troubling trend prevalent in the contemporary gaming landscape. Major acquisitions frequently culminate in widespread job losses and studio closures. A prime example is Microsoft's $68.7 billion acquisition of Blizzard, which led to the termination of 1,900 employees across both the company and Xbox. This unsettling pattern has persisted, with Microsoft implementing further layoffs totaling 1,600 positions, and another 1,600 projected by 2027. Similarly, Ubisoft has continued to make deep cuts to its workforce in an effort to maintain solvency. EA itself had already initiated significant layoffs prior to the Saudi acquisition, a decision seemingly aimed at mitigating the financial implications of its substantial debt.

The influx of both experienced and emerging talent into an already competitive job market, further exacerbated by prospective layoffs from EA, creates a challenging environment for those seeking employment in the gaming sector. This occurs despite the industry's robust financial health, with global gaming revenues projected to exceed $200 billion by 2025. The disparity between the industry's profitability and the financial precarity faced by its workforce raises critical questions about the distribution of wealth and the treatment of employees within this booming sector.
