Laika, the renowned animation studio, has formally submitted “The Better Part of Bravery,” a compelling original song featured in its latest animated masterpiece, “Wildwood,” for consideration in the upcoming Academy Awards. This poignant track, performed by the acclaimed band The Decemberists, serves as a powerful closing statement for the film, encapsulating its adventurous spirit and emotional core. The decision to put forward this song underscores the significant role music plays in enriching the storytelling experience within Laika’s unique cinematic universe.

Laika's 'Wildwood' Song Aims for Oscar Glory

On October 9, 2026, Laika officially announced its submission of “The Better Part of Bravery” from the animated film “Wildwood” for the Original Song category at the Academy Awards. This exclusive reveal highlights the collaboration between Laika and The Decemberists, who perform the song that concludes the movie. The narrative of “Wildwood” centers on teenager Prue McKeel, voiced by Peyton Elizabeth Lee, embarking on a perilous quest to rescue her younger brother, who has been carried away by a flock of crows. Her journey leads her deep into the mysterious Impassable Wilderness, a hidden, enchanted forest just beyond Portland, Oregon. Accompanied by her classmate, Curtis Mehlberg, portrayed by Jacob Tremblay, Prue finds herself immersed in a fantastical realm inhabited by talking animals, formidable bandits, and influential figures driven by personal loss and ambition. As the two young protagonists become entangled in a conflict that threatens the very balance of this magical forest, Prue must navigate these dangers to save her brother while also confronting forces that could shape the destiny of Wildwood itself. The film is an adaptation of the debut novel by Colin Meloy, the frontman of The Decemberists, marking the inception of “Wildwood Chronicles.” Meloy expressed his deep connection to the project, noting the extraordinary experience of seeing his story brought to life and the unique opportunity to revisit the world of “Wildwood” through music. He emphasized the profound significance of music guiding the audience as they depart the forest and the story concludes. The soundtrack, featuring this submitted song, is scheduled for release on Decca Records, coinciding with the film’s theatrical debut across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland. Additionally, The Decemberists contribute two bonus tracks, “Bandit Kind” and “Alexandra’s Lullaby.” The film’s orchestral score is masterfully composed by Dario Marianelli. David Burke, Laika’s chief marketing and operations officer and an executive producer for “Wildwood,” remarked on music’s integral role in the film’s DNA, praising the synergy between Marianelli’s sweeping score and Meloy’s heartfelt songs, which collectively create a deeply personal yet epic musical landscape. Directed and produced by Travis Knight, known for “Kubo and the Two Strings,” and written by Chris Butler of “ParaNorman” fame, “Wildwood” is set to have its global premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on Sunday, preceding its wider theatrical and soundtrack releases on October 23. The soundtrack features an extensive tracklist, culminating with “The Better Part of Bravery” and the two bonus tracks by The Decemberists.

This submission by Laika not only shines a spotlight on the artistic synergy between visual storytelling and musical composition but also underscores the studio's dedication to crafting immersive and emotionally resonant cinematic experiences. It prompts us to consider the profound impact a well-placed song can have in solidifying a film's narrative and leaving a lasting impression on its audience. The blend of Colin Meloy's literary vision, The Decemberists' distinctive sound, and Dario Marianelli's intricate score suggests a harmonious collaboration that elevates "Wildwood" beyond a mere animated feature, positioning it as a strong contender in the competitive awards season and reminding us of the powerful role music plays in the magic of cinema.
