Jaguar is embarking on an ambitious new chapter, repositioning itself as a purveyor of ultra-luxury electric vehicles. The vanguard of this transformation is officially named the "Type 01," a designation that encapsulates the brand's complete reset and its commitment to producing unique, zero-emission models. This strategic shift aims to attract a distinct high-end clientele, diverging from its traditional market and setting a new course for the iconic British marque.

The announcement of the Type 01 name follows the unveiling of the striking two-door Type 00 concept in December 2024, which served as a clear indicator of Jaguar's elevated aspirations. While the concept was a two-door, the production version of the Type 01 will evolve into a more practical four-door grand tourer, measuring approximately 204.7 inches (5.2 meters) in length. Its generous 126-inch (3.2-meter) wheelbase promises a spacious cabin and will house a substantial battery pack with a net capacity of approximately 120 kWh.

This innovative electric vehicle is projected to deliver an impressive driving experience, with a tri-motor configuration generating more than 986 horsepower and a massive 959 pound-feet (1,300 Newton-meters) of instant torque. Jaguar anticipates a remarkable range of 400 miles (644 kilometers) on a single charge under the EPA test cycle, extending to 430 miles (692 kilometers) under WLTP standards. The vehicle will come equipped with sophisticated air suspension and active twin-valve dampers, ensuring a remarkably smooth and refined ride, further enhanced by standard 23-inch wheels, with a 21-inch option for specific markets.

Jaguar's Managing Director, Rawdon Glover, emphasizes the symbolic significance of the name: "zero" denotes a comprehensive brand renewal, while "one" signifies exclusivity and unparalleled quality. This vision extends beyond just the powertrain, with Jaguar ruling out any range-extending combustion engines, firmly establishing its future as exclusively electric. The brand is prepared to shed a significant portion of its existing customer base, estimating that only about 15 percent will transition to the new ultra-luxury offerings. The target demographic for the Type 01 and subsequent models comprises discerning buyers who prioritize exquisite design and opulent interior craftsmanship above all else, including the specifics of the powertrain.

The Type 01 is poised for its global debut later this year, with initial deliveries expected in the first half of 2027. This ambitious venture into the super-luxury electric market marks a bold redefinition for Jaguar, as it seeks to carve a new niche in the automotive landscape. The design of the vehicle, which has already sparked discussion, is expected to maintain its distinctive and potentially controversial aesthetics, including the notable absence of a rear window in the production model, reflecting Jaguar's commitment to a truly unique and forward-thinking automotive future.
