A fresh entry into the competitive deckbuilder genre, 'Shroom and Gloom' from Team Lazerbeam, self-described as a "video game band making life more rad," is set to enter Early Access on September 10th. While 'Slay the Spire' continues its reign, this new title aims to carve its own niche by fusing card-plucking roguelike elements with first-person action, all presented through a distinctive punk cartoon aesthetic infused with a fungal theme. Players will explore dark, mycelium-infested dungeons, using two distinct card decks: one for navigation and another for combat against the lurking adversaries. Progressing through the 'Gloom' allows for the unlocking of new characters, additional cards, and a wealth of impressive artwork.

The game's compelling hand-drawn visuals are a significant draw, setting it apart in a crowded market. Ben Rausch, a primary artist and game designer for 'Shroom and Gloom,' elaborated on the artistic journey, sharing concept art that illustrates the evolution of the game's unique aesthetic. The development team had a clear vision for a first-person deckbuilder where players physically interact with cards in a 3D environment, a core idea that remained consistent. The game's intricate design was refined through a series of developmental phases, including a seven-day game jam, a dedicated art test, and a three-month prototype, each contributing to its depth and detail. Early feedback from players encouraged the team to expand the game's scope, leading to the inclusion of character progression and a richer narrative.

The distinctive art style is an extension of Team Lazerbeam's signature blend of hand-drawn, cartoonish, and humorously grotesque elements. The team previously experimented with 2D hand-drawn assets within 3D environments, a technique perfected for 'Shroom and Gloom.' A full month was dedicated to refining the visual style, ensuring the punk aesthetic scaled effectively into a massive world. This involved a technical challenge of seamlessly integrating hand-drawn assets, utilizing a limited palette of white, black, and gray, with lighting dictating color and mood. The unique monster designs, known as 'graycaps,' underwent extensive development, including the creation of physical clay models to ensure realistic proportions and diverse appearances that fit within the various in-game biomes. The team's inspiration for these creatures stems from a deep appreciation for nature and mycology, with developers actively studying and even growing mushrooms to inform their designs.

Ultimately, 'Shroom and Gloom' aims to captivate players through its striking visuals and retain them with engaging gameplay. The team, composed of artists and musicians, prioritizes creating a compelling atmosphere first, then building gameplay mechanics that enhance that 'vibe.' This integrated approach ensures that the game's artistic and interactive elements coalesce into a uniquely immersive experience.
