Infiniti is strategically postponing the release of its high-performance QX80 Red Sport SUV, extending its development by approximately a year. This decision stems from a desire to create a more formidable competitor against luxury performance giants like Mercedes-AMG and BMW M. The company acknowledges that a simple increase in horsepower is insufficient for the discerning market; instead, a holistic engineering approach is required. The revised development will encompass significant upgrades to suspension, braking, and exterior styling, ensuring the vehicle offers a comprehensive high-performance package that transcends mere straight-line speed. Initially, Infiniti envisioned a 600-horsepower machine, with discussions even hinting at exceeding 700 horsepower. The development, now spearheaded by NISMO, Nissan's performance division, will see a substantial power boost to the existing 450-hp twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, promising well over 540 hp. This would position the QX80 Red Sport ahead of rivals such as the BMW X7 M60i, which produces 523 hp. The goal is to achieve a 0-60 mph acceleration in under five seconds. Beyond power, the upcoming model will feature a valved exhaust system, a redesigned front fascia, broader fenders, and striking 24-inch wheels, alongside a unique interior treatment. Infiniti Americas boss Eic Ledieu emphasized that the project requires meticulous development to ensure a lasting first impression, especially for a vehicle expected to command a six-figure price tag.
The highly anticipated Infiniti QX80 Red Sport is projected to carry a premium of roughly $30,000 over the standard QX80 Sport, which starts at $103,945. Infiniti aims to sell more than 600 units annually. This delay, pushing back an original December release, signifies a renewed commitment to quality and comprehensive performance. Ledieu stated that the current scope of work is vastly different and more ambitious than what was initially planned, underscoring that the additional development time will ultimately prove worthwhile. While the focus remains on the Red Sport, discussions about an even more extreme QX80 Track Spec variant, potentially boasting over 700 hp and inspired by the 1,000-hp QX80 R-Spec show vehicle with Nissan GT-R elements, are ongoing. However, such a specialized creation requires a distinct development pathway, and its feasibility will be assessed following the Red Sport's successful market introduction.
