Hyke has made a significant leap this season by officially introducing its menswear collection, a move long-awaited by the fashion industry. This expansion comes with a collection that promises to contend with leading minimal menswear labels in Japan, showcasing impeccably tailored shirts, robust cargo jackets, and sleek raincoats, all meticulously styled with distinct eyewear and precise side-partings. The brand's deep expertise in utilitarian design, honed since 1998 under founders Hideaki Yoshihara and Yukiko Ode, provides a strong foundation for this new venture. Their latest collection, presented via a cinematically produced film, draws inspiration from vintage military apparel, reimagining classic pieces with modern fabrics and innovative design elements. This season also continued Hyke's tradition of creative womenswear and thoughtful collaborations.

Hyke Redefines Utilitarian Chic with Menswear Debut and Artistic Presentation

On September 9, 2026, the renowned Japanese fashion house Hyke, led by the visionary duo Hideaki Yoshihara and Yukiko Ode, unveiled its Spring 2027 collection, making a landmark entry into the menswear market. This highly anticipated expansion brings Hyke's signature utilitarian aesthetic to a new audience, featuring meticulously crafted pieces such as perfect saxe blue shirts, durable black cargo jackets, and sleek raincoats, often paired with serious spectacles and sharp side-parted hairstyles, positioning the brand as a formidable competitor in Japan's burgeoning minimal menswear scene.

Yoshihara and Ode, who began their design journey in 1998 with their first brand, Green, leverage their extensive knowledge of functional clothing. For this collection, they delved into their extensive archives of vintage and U.S. Army clothing references. Notable transformations include M-51 arctic trousers reimagined as spacious drawstring pants and an M-65 field jacket re-engineered with windproof and waterproof Pertex fabric, blending historical authenticity with contemporary performance.

Speaking via video call, Yoshihara shared insights into the brand's decision to fully commit to menswear. "We've been incorporating unisex styles for approximately ten seasons, but wholesale buyers consistently requested dedicated menswear lines," he explained. "After a year of deliberation, we decided to fully embrace it, given our existing experience and infrastructure."

The collection was not without its usual innovative touches across both menswear and womenswear. Womenswear tailoring featured strategically slit sleeves for enhanced movement, while cricket sweater vests were designed with open sides. A men's oversized T-shirt incorporated a vertical neck zip, creating a distinctly androgynous silhouette. Hyke also continued its tradition of impactful collaborations, partnering with Briefing for bags and reinterpreting British icon Baracuta's famous tartan lining into a sophisticated black and beige version, which appeared in desert storm coats, button-up shirts, and shirt dresses.

For several seasons, Hyke has opted for video presentations. This time, the brand drew inspiration from choreographer Cindy Van Acker and the Belgian contemporary dance company Rosas. Models were staged as if waiting for a train, transitioning from seated positions to standing and gracefully traversing the catwalk. Yoshihara elaborated, "Our focus was on minimal, everyday movements—walking, sitting, and standing—to simultaneously highlight the garments." Despite the film's slick production, the clothes, while impressive, left some observers yearning for the dynamism of a live runway show, prompting reflections on a potential return to traditional presentations.

From a journalist's perspective, Hyke's bold expansion into menswear represents a strategic and well-executed move, capitalizing on their decades of expertise in utilitarian design. The collection itself is a testament to thoughtful evolution, blending heritage influences with modern functionality. The innovative presentation, while visually compelling, also sparks a discussion about the evolving landscape of fashion shows. While digital presentations offer reach and artistic freedom, the irreplaceable energy and immediate impact of a live runway remain a powerful draw. Hyke's journey into menswear, coupled with their consistent innovation in presentation and design, signals a brand that is both deeply rooted in its philosophy and forward-thinking in its approach.
