The allure of the Scottish Highlands, famously romanticized by figures like Queen Victoria and Sir Walter Scott, has long captivated visitors. However, this historical appreciation for its “wild loveliness” inadvertently contributed to ecological degradation, leaving Scotland as one of the world's most nature-depleted nations. This environmental crisis, stemming from practices like land mismanagement on grouse moors and deer parks, stands in stark contrast to the picturesque landscapes often depicted in art, which, as one local puts it, represent “a biodiversity disaster captured in real time.”

Addressing this ecological challenge, WildLand, a conservation group founded in 2006 by Danish businessman Anders Holch Povlsen, has embarked on an ambitious 200-year restoration project. As Scotland’s largest private landowner, WildLand manages over 222,000 acres, with a significant rewilding effort including the planting of over six million trees in the last 12 years. Their hospitality ventures, such as Aldourie Castle and Killiehuntly Farmhouse, immerse guests in these rejuvenated landscapes. The latest addition, Hope Lodge on the northwest coast, promises to be a standout, offering a blend of historical charm and environmental stewardship.

Hope Lodge, originally built as a shooting lodge in 1867, embodies a unique blend of history and contemporary eco-conscious hospitality. Available for hotel stays from August to October and private hire for the rest of the year, the lodge has undergone a decade-long renovation led by Cécile & Boyd, the design firm renowned for Singita’s safari lodges. This meticulous restoration preserved much of the original structure and furnishings, including ironwork, burlap wall-coverings, and Victorian benches, while integrating modern comforts and design elements. Guests are treated to a relaxed atmosphere, encouraging self-service from the Butler’s Pantry and enjoying single malts in The Billiards Room. The WildLand team, many with environmental science backgrounds, enhance the experience by sharing their knowledge of peatland restoration and wildlife corridors, making every stay both luxurious and educational. The lodge’s seven cozy rooms feature antique four-poster beds, hand-dyed linens, and freestanding baths, all designed to evoke the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The meticulous service, from remembering guest preferences to thoughtfully informing them about the local flora, ensures a deeply personal and memorable visit.

The immersive experience at Hope Lodge extends beyond its comfortable interiors into the breathtaking natural surroundings. Guests are encouraged to explore the rewilded landscapes through diverse activities curated by WildLand’s field guides. From paddleboarding and 4x4 excursions to trekking with Shetland ponies and sand yachting, each adventure is designed to connect visitors with the environment, often tied to specific elements like water or earth, and subtly highlighting WildLand’s conservation achievements. A day focused on water might include a cold plunge in the loch, followed by a wood-fired sauna, and a hike up Ben Hope, where guides point out flourishing native trees and rare bird calls. A picnic by a waterfall, featuring local produce and foraged ingredients, further enriches the connection to the land. The lodge’s dining experience celebrates the Scottish coast, offering dishes like langoustines grilled over a firepit and monkfish with sea lettuces. Even exploring the nearby estuary reveals ongoing restoration efforts, with Victorian ruins and crumbling bothies being meticulously preserved. The pristine beach, frequented by harbor porpoises and vibrant marine life, remains untouched by human footprints, underscoring the success of these conservation initiatives. The gathering clouds in the distance serve as a gentle reminder of the Scottish weather, reinforcing the timeless advice: a good waterproof is essential for enjoying Scotland, though a reservation at Hope Lodge undoubtedly enhances the experience, offering both comfort and a profound connection to a landscape on the path to recovery.

The dedicated conservation efforts at Hope Lodge and throughout WildLand's properties exemplify a commitment to ecological preservation and sustainable tourism. By intertwining luxury hospitality with meaningful environmental restoration, they offer a model for how human enjoyment can coexist with and actively contribute to the recovery of natural ecosystems. This initiative fosters a deeper appreciation for the delicate balance of nature, inspiring visitors to become advocates for environmental stewardship and reminding us that true beauty lies in the health and vitality of our planet.
