Traditionally, downloadable content released in the middle of a game's season for the Anno series has not been as impactful as initial or final expansions. These often serve as foundational elements for later additions rather than standalone exciting features. Therefore, my expectations for the Hippodrome DLC in Anno 117: Pax Romana were modest, a view that proved to be quite narrow-minded. While it is essentially a single monumental structure, its contribution to the game is substantial.

This particular DLC introduces a new research pathway that enables players to construct the Hippodrome. Historically, in both Byzantine and Roman cultures, Hippodromes held significant political weight, serving as venues where both common citizens and nobility gathered for events like chariot races. Emperors frequently utilized these locations for state ceremonies and other major public spectacles. The Anno 117 Hippodrome DLC focuses primarily on chariot racing, though its historical grandeur and ceremonial importance are well-replicated, adding a layer of authenticity and strategic depth.

The construction of such wonders in Anno games is a grand and intricate process, unfolding in various stages, each demanding immense quantities of resources. Players typically need hundreds of tons of timber and concrete, alongside more scarce materials like marble and mosaics. The availability of these resources can vary greatly based on difficulty settings and the randomness of island generation. The Hippodrome’s construction mirrors this complexity, requiring additional materials such as cloth and granite from distant regions like Albion, necessitating the development of new supply chains and societies to support its construction. This intricate resource management and extensive planning provide a much-needed long-term objective for players, transforming islands into prosperous centers capable of sustaining these monumental endeavors.

Upon the completion of its four construction phases, the Hippodrome significantly enhances the gameplay experience. It boosts the splendor level of an island and provides production benefits across the entire area, with increasing splendor levels amplifying these advantages. This level of interconnectedness is a novel feature for Anno 117, where most buildings operate in isolation. Unlike basic structures or even the amphitheater, which primarily offers prestige, the Hippodrome's dynamic interaction with other buildings and its influence on overall island production introduce a new strategic dimension. Furthermore, a complementary 2.0 update enhances the role of prestige, introducing a 'Heroic' class of specialists who offer powerful game-changing abilities, such as streamlining production chains or offering alternative resource conversions, which are crucial for advanced gameplay.

While Anno 117 continues to evolve, the Prophecies of Ash and Hippodrome DLCs have successfully refined some of the game's initial challenges and introduced unforeseen features. This progression has significantly heightened anticipation for future developments from Ubisoft Mainz. The meticulous approach to balancing new additions, unlike the overwhelming boosts seen in previous Anno titles, suggests a promising future for Anno 117, fostering a more engaging and strategically rewarding environment for players committed to long-term world-building and prosperity.
