Guerlain is introducing a significant new women's fragrance, L'Heure Bleue, marking its first major release in almost ten years since Mon Guerlain in 2017. Gabrielle Saint-Genis, the CEO, emphasizes the brand's deliberate approach, stating that new creations are only launched when they offer genuine value. She highlights Guerlain's 200-year legacy of passion and innovation in perfumery, noting that this particular launch serves as a tribute to Jacques Guerlain's original extraordinary creation.

The new L'Heure Bleue is a contemporary reinterpretation of a fragrance initially conceived by Jacques Guerlain in 1912, a scent that remains part of the house's collection today, albeit less widely known. Saint-Genis recounted that Jacques Guerlain was inspired to create L'Heure Bleue after a profound emotional experience during an evening crossing of the Pont Neuf in Paris. Fascinated by the "blue hour"—a serene moment when the atmosphere is bathed in blue, and plants release their most exquisite aromas—he dedicated two years to capturing this ephemeral beauty in a fragrance. For Delphine Jelk, Guerlain's current director of perfume creation, the challenge was to imagine how Jacques Guerlain would craft the "fragrance of the sky" with today's expanded olfactory palette. Jelk's version introduces a marine, salty, and ozonic character through Cascalone and features a novel iris tincture, resulting in a luminous and crystalline iris note.

The new L'Heure Bleue is rolling out globally this Friday, following an earlier release in China. Both the 1912 original and Jelk's new creation will coexist, with the former being rebranded as L'Heure Bleue 1912 to distinguish it. This strategy of reinterpreting heritage reflects a desire to offer consumers something enduring in a rapidly changing world. Saint-Genis stresses that while Guerlain aims for sophistication, its vision is not one of elitist exclusivity, striving instead to provide exceptional quality at competitive prices, starting from €86 for a 30ml bottle. This approach is particularly relevant in a fragrance market increasingly divided between accessible prestige and ultra-premium segments. Guerlain, with its thriving high-end collections like L'Art & La Matière, leverages its history to reinforce its expertise and legitimacy against intensifying competition, and continues to see fragrance as a key growth category, expanding at double-digit rates.

Guerlain's long-standing heritage and commitment to excellence provide a unique foundation in the luxury market. By drawing on nearly two centuries of tradition while embracing modern innovation, the brand remains relevant and appealing. This blend of historical depth and contemporary vision resonates particularly with younger consumers seeking authenticity and meaningful differentiation. The careful balance between preserving classic creations and introducing new interpretations allows Guerlain to honor its past while confidently stepping into the future, ensuring its continued prominence in the global fragrance industry.
