GM's 6.2-liter V-8 Engine Failures Trigger New NHTSA Investigation
General Motors is currently facing intense scrutiny from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) due to persistent, severe engine failures. This new inquiry focuses on GM's L87 6.2-liter V-8 engine, which was previously the subject of recall 25V-274. Despite initial remediation efforts, including inspections, oil changes, and even engine replacements for some vehicles, a significant number of these engines continue to experience catastrophic failures, prompting a deeper dive from safety regulators.
NHTSA Intensifies Scrutiny on GM's V-8 Engines After Continued Failures
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) recently initiated an expanded probe into General Motors' 6.2-liter V-8 engines, identified by the code L87. This action, formally opened on August 20, comes in response to a concerning pattern of engine malfunctions, particularly in vehicles that had already undergone a recall remedy (recall 25V-274). The initial recall, affecting 597,630 trucks and SUVs across the United States, addressed manufacturing defects in crankshafts and connecting rods that could lead to severe engine damage.
GM's initial solution for the recall involved inspecting engines and, for those deemed sound, recommending a higher oil viscosity, a new oil fill cap, and an oil filter replacement. Engines that failed inspection were slated for complete replacement. However, these measures appear to have been insufficient. The ODI has since received 499 complaints detailing engine failures post-remedy. Alarmingly, 473 of these incidents involved vehicles that received the oil change recommendation, while 26 occurred in vehicles with entirely new engines. General Motors itself has reported an even larger figure, with 6,953 complaints regarding post-remedy engine failures. Furthermore, the ODI has uncovered an additional 191 failures in L87 engines produced outside the original recall's scope, leading to the expansion of the current investigation.
This ongoing engine saga is not new for GM. The company faced a class-action lawsuit last year, alleging that it knowingly sold vehicles equipped with faulty engines. Earlier this year, GM again adjusted its recommended oil viscosity for the L87, marking the second such change for the recalled engine series. The current, broader investigation by the ODI underscores the gravity of the situation and the critical need for a definitive resolution to these persistent engine issues.
