GM Recalls SUVs for Transmission Issue
General Motors has announced a significant recall affecting over 43,000 full-size SUVs from the 2022 model year. To counteract this potential danger, GM will implement a new transmission control module (TCM) software update. This innovative software is designed to actively monitor the performance of the transmission's valves. It is capable of detecting excessive wear approximately 10,000 miles before a critical lock-up event might occur. If the software identifies such wear, it will automatically restrict the transmission to fifth gear, thereby preventing the rear wheels from locking. Concurrently, a service engine light will illuminate on the instrument panel, accompanied by a message indicating reduced propulsion, alerting the driver to the issue.
The recall documents further specify that all 2023 and newer model year GM full-size SUVs are already equipped with this enhanced transmission software. Notification letters for owners of the affected 2022 models are scheduled for dispatch on March 30th.
