General Motors Recalls Brake Fluid Due to Contamination Risk

General Motors has initiated a significant recall concerning specific batches of brake fluid, impacting more than 40,000 units. This action follows findings of non-compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards, as detailed in documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The issue specifically targets ACDelco GMW DOT 3 brake and clutch fluid, identified by part number 19353126. These fluids, manufactured between October 19 and December 28, 2022, were found to contain visible particulates. Such contamination poses a serious risk, as it can diminish the effectiveness of a vehicle's braking system, thereby increasing the potential for collisions. An investigation launched on August 7, 2025, by a third-party testing facility, revealed these regulatory violations. Subsequently, GM's internal probe confirmed the presence of sediment. Chemical analysis by GM's supplier traced the precipitates to two internal additives, ruling out external contamination, although the exact reason for their presence post-filtration remains undetermined.

In response to this safety concern, General Motors has opted to compensate dealers and direct purchasers of ACDelco for any unsold inventory of the compromised fluid, rather than facilitating a fluid replacement program. Notifications to dealers commenced on May 6, with direct purchasers scheduled to be informed by June 8.
