Gamescom 2026 Plagued by Thefts, Indie Developers Suffer Losses
Gamescom 2026 has been significantly impacted by a wave of thefts, with at least three independent game studios publicly reporting the loss of valuable equipment from their exhibition spaces. The event's organizing body has acknowledged these incidents through a social media post, which many have deemed insufficient as it did not offer any form of reimbursement to the affected indie exhibitors.
Reports of these unfortunate incidents began to surface when Ryan Laley, the solo developer behind the game Mimic, announced that his laptop and other hardware located in his exhibit area had been stolen. He detailed in a video that the items were taken overnight from a section that is supposedly restricted and continuously monitored by security personnel. During the same period, Tessera Studios, creators of The Zibbo Show, reported the loss of personal computers, two laptops, and a Steam Deck, all containing crucial game demos and sensitive company information. Furthermore, iam8bit Presents, an indie game publisher, had two computers stolen from their booth, raising concerns about potential leaks of their upcoming titles, Petal Runner and Escape Academy 2.
Ukiyo Studios also shared a past experience, recalling a laptop theft from their Gamescom booth two years prior. They alleged that when they attempted to report the incident, event staff tried to dissuade them, seemingly to protect the public image of Gamescom and the city of Cologne. Ukiyo Studios further noted that despite participating in numerous events annually, Gamescom is the only one where they feel compelled to secure their equipment overnight due to perceived inadequate security.
The gaming community has shown solidarity, with individuals like IndieGameJoe donating funds to help Mimic's developer replace stolen items. However, Gamescom's official response has been met with disappointment, primarily offering congratulations to developers for receiving community support and confirming that authorities had been notified. The organizers' suggestions that exhibitors should book individual booth security or insure their equipment are seen by many as an attempt to deflect responsibility for the event's security shortcomings. While some equipment has been replaced, many developers now face the burden of tracking down or reacquiring stolen items, along with the anxiety of potential leaks of their unreleased game builds. It is hoped that Gamescom will significantly enhance its security measures in the future to prevent such occurrences, as their current statement has done little to inspire confidence.
