A new video game studio, MBC Game Studio, has announced its debut title, "1001 Threads of Mazin," an action-adventure game drawing inspiration from the timeless collection of stories, "One Thousand and One Nights," also known as "Arabian Nights." This ambitious project, backed by Saudi Arabia, was unveiled at Gamescom's Opening Night Live. The studio aims to reinterpret the classic narrative by focusing on new characters and integrating a broader spectrum of Arabic folklore, moving beyond the familiar tales of Aladdin, Ali Baba, and Sinbad.

The game's creative vision, led by director Lars Bonde, reimagines the classic frame story of Scheherazade recounting tales to King Shahryar. However, instead of famous figures, "1001 Threads of Mazin" introduces three original protagonists: Yusra, Malik, and Sufyan. These unlikely heroes embark on a quest to recover the lost power of the Mizan and confront an ancient jinn king whose thirst for vengeance threatens humanity. This approach allows the studio to explore a wider array of regional myths and legends.

Daniel Engelhardt, CEO of MBC Game Studio, explained that the decision to adapt "1,001 Arabian Nights" stemmed from its rich and diverse storytelling tradition. He emphasized that the collection is not a singular narrative but a tapestry of stories built over centuries, rooted in an incredible oral tradition. This perspective allows the game to serve as a launchpad for exploring Arabic folklore more broadly, rather than simply retell existing narratives.

"1001 Threads of Mazin" is designed for cooperative play, supporting up to three players who can seamlessly join or leave the game. A key feature is the innovative flying carpet traversal system, which offers players a sense of adventure, speed, and exploration. This mechanic is central to both the gameplay and the storytelling, opening up new possibilities for how players interact with the world and its narratives. The studio, comprising a global team with veterans from prominent game developers, has placed a significant emphasis on hiring Arabic developers, folklore specialists, and actors to ensure cultural authenticity and depth.

Engelhardt highlighted the integral role of folklore experts in the development process, noting that some of the earliest hires were specialists from the region who possess deep knowledge of Arabic culture and history. These experts are not merely consultants but active members of the design, world-building, and narrative teams, profoundly influencing the game's mechanics, story, and artistic direction. This collaborative approach extends to the game's artists, whose regional insights have inspired elements like fallen jinn, adding unique layers to the game's lore and visuals.

Furthermore, the studio is committed to authentic voice acting. Engelhardt confirmed that all characters in "1001 Threads of Mazin" will be voiced by native Arabic speakers for both English and Arabic versions of the game. This commitment has resonated deeply with the actors during casting sessions, as they connect with stories passed down through generations. This emotional connection provides significant motivation for the team, underscoring the game's potential to appeal globally while also fostering a strong sense of cultural pride within the region.

While a release date for "1001 Threads of Mazin" for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC has not yet been announced, MBC is actively promoting the game through hands-on demos at events like Gamescom, engaging consumers, press, and content creators.

The development of "1001 Threads of Mazin" marks a significant effort by MBC Game Studio to bring a culturally rich and authentic adaptation of "One Thousand and One Nights" to the global gaming community. By focusing on new characters, embracing a broader range of Arabic folklore, and ensuring the involvement of regional experts and voice actors, the studio is crafting an experience that promises both innovative gameplay and profound cultural resonance. This venture reflects a dedication to authentic storytelling and a desire to introduce players to the depth and diversity of Arabian heritage.
