A passionate gamer named PhyFawkes, known on Reddit, has undertaken an impressive customization project, reimagining the Steam Deck as a more compact, Game Boy-esque device, affectionately named the "Steam Boy." This endeavor was sparked by a simple question: could the Steam Deck's internal components be fitted into a much smaller chassis? The answer, largely, is yes, demonstrating a remarkable feat of engineering and design.

The core of this innovative handheld is a 3D-printed PETG casing, meticulously crafted to accommodate the Steam Deck's miniature motherboard, complete with its APU heatsink and cooling fans, as well as its substantial battery. Furthermore, the internal speakers and various ribbon cables have been cleverly integrated into the frame. While the device's overall footprint is significantly reduced—less than half the size of the original Steam Deck—it gains some thickness due to the intricate stacking of hardware. Currently, the primary challenge remains integrating the 1200 x 1080 90 Hz OLED screen, which will necessitate an adapter board and BIOS adjustments. Additionally, the project aims to incorporate triggers, with at least one already identified as suitable for external mounting.

The "Steam Boy" project is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication within the gaming community, showcasing a desire to personalize and optimize gaming hardware. This creation joins a growing list of impressive modifications to Valve's platforms, reflecting a broader trend among enthusiasts who enjoy disassembling and reconfiguring their devices. Such creative endeavors push the boundaries of what's possible with existing technology, inspiring further innovation and demonstrating the potential for custom-built gaming experiences.
