Ahead of the forthcoming network test for "The Duskbloods," a new title from FromSoftware, insights from various sources offer a glimpse into its mechanics and influences. Renowned Soulsborne community figures, VaatiVidya and Oroboro, have shared their extensive gameplay experiences, providing detailed breakdowns, while prominent gaming publications like IGN and Automaton have conducted interviews with Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creative force behind FromSoftware. These discussions shed light on the game's innovative design choices, particularly its blend of player-versus-player and player-versus-environment elements, and its intriguing connections to the studio's celebrated legacy.

The game adopts a structural framework reminiscent of "Nightreign," featuring instanced, run-based scenarios with escalating difficulty determined by a ticking timer. Players will likely encounter character archetypes equipped with distinct abilities and gear, echoing the strategic depth seen in "Nightreign." "The Duskbloods" is set to launch with three distinct maps, exceeding the initial offerings of "Nightreign" even after its expansion content. This suggests a more expansive and varied initial experience for players.

While "The Duskbloods" places a greater emphasis on player-versus-player combat than "Nightreign," it also provides avenues for players who prefer cooperative play. Matches revolve around completing PvE objectives to accumulate a "Virtue" score, with high-scoring individuals progressing to subsequent rounds. The game incorporates PvP events and optional goals within its maps, culminating in a mandatory PvP showdown among surviving players. Interestingly, there's an option to transform the final encounter into a cooperative PvE boss battle, similar to "Nightreign's" Nightlords, offering flexibility for different playstyles. Conversely, an in-game item can intensify the PvP aspect, rewarding players with Virtue for eliminating opponents.

As expected from a FromSoftware creation, "The Duskbloods" cleverly reintroduces familiar motifs and design elements within a fresh context. From its initial reveal, the game has drawn comparisons to "Bloodborne," suggesting it could be a spiritual successor. Recurring visual themes include hooded ogre-like creatures reminiscent of "Bloodborne's" Church Giants, environments that evoke Yharnam's gothic architecture, and a clock tower vista. A cathedral roof boss fight bears a striking resemblance to encounters with the Dark Souls Gargoyles or Bloodborne's Martyr Logarius. Furthermore, players will notice weapons with a whirling saw design, echoing those found in "Elden Ring" and "Bloodborne." The interior of a cathedral within the game strongly mirrors the Upper Cathedral Ward, and a serene field of white flowers provides a recurring visual element.

The game's vertical level design, as showcased in one of its maps, evokes the intricate and dense environments of "Shadow of the Erdtree" from "Elden Ring" or "Nightreign's" Great Hollow. This architectural approach, praised as some of FromSoftware's finest, focuses on layered, interconnected areas rather than sprawling open spaces. However, the success of this design in "The Duskbloods" will depend on how well it integrates with the game's time-sensitive mechanics, considering how similar constraints impacted "Nightreign."

FromSoftware's history with long-term multiplayer support and balance has been a point of contention for some players. While the studio excels at crafting compelling single-player action RPGs, its multiplayer components sometimes suffer from a lack of sustained attention, as evidenced by "Nightreign" losing its player base relatively quickly after launch. The enthusiast community yearns for FromSoftware's next major release, whether it's an "Elden Ring" sequel, an "Armored Core" expansion, or an entirely new venture, hoping for a more comprehensive and enduring experience. The prospect of "The Duskbloods" being a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive raises concerns about its availability on PC, with many hoping for a timely port to fully experience the game on their preferred platform. The upcoming network test will undoubtedly provide more clarity on these points.
