Freediving: Embracing the Underwater World with Timeless Focus

The experience of freediving, where the conscious mind transcends temporal perception, offers a unique communion with the aquatic realm. As articulated by French world champion freediver Morgan Bourc'his, the essence of a deep dive lies in the absence of thought, a state of pure present moment awareness. My own journey into the fundamentals of freediving in Marseilles, a sport where timing is both critical and to be disregarded, was an illuminating exploration of this philosophy. While Bourc'his can effortlessly suspend his breath for upwards of seven minutes, my initial attempts were considerably shorter. Yet, with the backing of Tudor, Bourc'his’s primary sponsor, and the robust Pelagos 42-mm dive watch adorning my wrist, I embarked on a quest to extend my underwater endurance.

Interestingly, the true nature of freediving diverges from the time-centric focus of SCUBA. Unlike monitoring bottom times and decompression limits, freediving emphasizes depth rather than duration during the actual descent. A clear, unburdened mind is crucial when pulling oneself down a guideline attached to a surface buoy. For competitive freedivers like Bourc'his, the measure of success is purely in meters descended. Even during our pool training sessions, Bourc'his, with an almost meditative calm, used his Pelagos to time our breath-holding exercises. Starting with brief intervals, I gradually extended my personal record to over two minutes, a significant achievement that prepared me for the more unpredictable environment of the open ocean, with its waves, currents, and even the distant possibility of marine life.

However, the concept of time in freediving is more nuanced than it appears. Bourc'his explains that in this decelerated state, minutes can feel like an eternity, yet the actual duration of a dive might be far longer than perceived. This detachment from objective time, and the subsequent check of one's watch post-dive, reveals a profound connection to the present. This interplay between time consciousness and dissociation extends beyond freediving into Bourc'his’s daily existence. His original blue-dialed Pelagos remains his trusted companion, even during his most daring underwater expeditions, such as encountering a pod of humpback whales in the frigid Norwegian waters. For him, the watch is a constant, reliable presence, a tangible link to his experiences.

For most individuals, the rigorous demands Bourc'his places on his Pelagos will likely never be replicated. Nevertheless, the watch's capabilities provide reassurance for anyone considering a deeper engagement with the underwater world. Since its debut at Baselworld in 2012, the Pelagos has been engineered as a high-performance instrument for serious divers, featuring a titanium construction, a 42mm diameter, and an impressive 500-meter water resistance. Its evolution, including the incorporation of in-house movements and the recent introduction of the Pelagos Ultra, with its 43mm titanium case and remarkable 1,000-meter water resistance, underscores Tudor's commitment to pushing boundaries. Bourc'his himself favors the Ultra, noting its enhanced capabilities with minimal changes in size, and cherishes his unique, engraved model commemorating his final World Championship dive. In essence, the Pelagos serves not merely as a timepiece, but as a symbolic anchor to the human world, allowing freedivers to immerse themselves fully in the ocean's embrace while retaining a connection to their origins.

Ultimately, freediving offers a profound lesson in self-awareness and the art of deliberate living. It challenges the societal emphasis on speed and achievement, advocating instead for a purposeful deceleration. As Bourc'his eloquently states, to excel in freediving requires a gentle and unhurried approach, a paradox that resonates deeply within the sport. This philosophy transcends the underwater environment, offering a valuable framework for navigating the complexities of everyday life. By embracing stillness and a heightened awareness of the present, freediving, much like a reliable timepiece, teaches us to appreciate the richness of existence, both beneath the waves and above.
