Framework has unveiled an updated iteration of its Framework 12 portable computer, now equipped with Intel's advanced Wildcat Lake processors. This new model, while maintaining its original 50 Wh battery capacity, boasts impressive increases in power autonomy. The company highlights a remarkable 57% extension in web browsing endurance and a 70% boost in streaming video playback, positioning battery longevity as a key differentiator for this device.

The Framework 12 model is recognized as a versatile 2-in-1 device, designed for touchscreen and traditional keyboard input. It caters primarily to users seeking a lightweight, energy-efficient machine for academic pursuits and everyday productivity. Previously, these laptops were powered by Intel's 13th-generation Raptor Lake-U low-power chips. However, subsequent orders will integrate the newer, equally power-efficient Wildcat Lake processors, specifically from the Core Series 3 lineup.

Framework currently offers several configuration choices for this enhanced model. For instance, the Core 3 304 variant features a maximum clock speed of 4.3 GHz, comprises 1 performance core and 4 low-power efficient cores (1 P + 4 LPE), and is priced at $549 / £549. Moving up, the Core 5 320 model provides a 4.6 GHz clock speed with 2 P + 4 LPE cores, costing $779 / £779. The top-tier Core 7 350 option reaches 4.8 GHz with 2 P + 4 LPE cores, available for $999 / £999. These figures represent base prices, with additional costs for memory and storage in DIY kits. While these processors are not designed for demanding tasks or intensive gaming—the Intel Core 7 350, for example, includes only two Xe (GPU) cores, significantly less than rumored upcoming handheld chips—they are well-suited for daily use.

Beyond the processor upgrade, the new Framework 12 incorporates several other notable improvements. These include the integration of Wi-Fi 7 for faster wireless connectivity, a comfortable backlit keyboard for improved typing in various lighting conditions, Thunderbolt 4 ports for high-speed data transfer and versatile connectivity, and a fingerprint reader for enhanced security and convenient login. Furthermore, the laptop now comes with Fedora Linux pre-installed, a welcome addition for users who prefer an open-source operating system without the hassle of manual installation. This move reflects a thoughtful approach to user convenience, particularly for those new to Linux or seeking a ready-to-use system.

The transition to Wildcat Lake processors, as Framework suggests, dramatically extends battery performance. The company’s assertions of significantly longer usage times for web browsing and video streaming are substantial. Although these are bold claims, they align with observations from other Intel chips, such as Panther Lake (which utilizes the same 18A node), indicating a credible possibility. These efficiency gains, combined with a suite of hardware enhancements including Wi-Fi 7, a backlit keyboard, Thunderbolt 4, and a fingerprint reader, collectively elevate the user experience. The inclusion of Fedora Linux as a default operating system further streamlines the setup process for many, making the Framework 12 a compelling option for those seeking a modern, adaptable, and highly efficient portable computing solution.
