In the wake of BioWare's recent closure by EA, a move that also saw the cancellation of an upcoming Mass Effect title and significant workforce reductions across the company, former BioWare game director and general manager Casey Hudson has shared his sentiments. Hudson, a pivotal figure behind some of BioWare's most celebrated franchises, took to social media to acknowledge the somber news. He expressed gratitude for his time at the studio, highlighting the enduring legacy of BioWare's approach to crafting memorable stories, expansive worlds, and compelling characters, suggesting that this influence will persist through the talent of its former staff now dispersed throughout the industry.

Hudson's career at BioWare spanned several significant projects, including his role as project director for the acclaimed Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the entire Mass Effect trilogy. After an initial departure in 2014, he returned to lead the studio as general manager in 2017. His second tenure concluded in 2020, following the challenging development and eventual release of Anthem, a live-service shooter that failed to meet expectations. Despite these professional transitions, Hudson has continued to embody the innovative spirit he attributes to BioWare.

Following his second departure from BioWare and the subsequent closure of his NetEase-backed studio, Humanoid Origin, in 2024, Hudson wasted no time in establishing Arcanaut Studios in 2025. This new venture sees him collaborating with a team largely composed of former BioWare developers. Their current project, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is described as a narrative-driven action RPG, which Hudson proudly refers to as a spiritual successor to the beloved KotOR. This ongoing work serves as a testament to his belief in BioWare's lasting impact on the gaming world.

The news of BioWare's shuttering has resonated deeply throughout the gaming community and among industry veterans. Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt, recalled BioWare's critical assistance during the early development of The Witcher 1, emphasizing the profound role BioWare played in CD Projekt's history. Similarly, Larian CEO Swen Vincke credited BioWare with pioneering the expansion of RPGs into a major genre. Warren Spector, a legendary figure in immersive sim development, voiced a more direct condemnation, labeling the closure as "utter bullshit," reflecting a widespread sentiment of dismay and frustration over the loss of such an influential studio.
