Ferrari Offers Retrofit for Physical Steering Wheel Buttons

Ferrari has acknowledged a design misstep and is now offering a solution to its customers. The luxury automaker is providing an upgrade option for specific models, allowing owners to replace the touch-capacitive steering wheel controls with more traditional, physical buttons. This initiative reflects a responsive approach to client feedback, particularly after the initial integration of capacitive controls in models like the SF90 received criticism from users who preferred tactile interfaces.

The move to reintroduce physical buttons stems from the user experience feedback Ferrari gathered following the launch of the SF90. Initially, the company aimed to showcase advanced technology by incorporating capacitive touch controls into the steering wheel, a decision that was met with disapproval from many drivers who found them less intuitive and precise. In response, Ferrari had already reverted to physical buttons for the newer Amalfi model, indicating a shift back towards driver-preferred interfaces.

Now, this enhancement is being extended to existing Ferrari Purosangue and 12Cilindri models. Ferrari of Atlanta recently announced its capability to perform this upgrade, allowing owners to have the steering wheel's control section replaced with one featuring actual, clickable buttons for functions such as menu navigation, phone controls, and cruise control. Notably, the retrofit process is designed to be straightforward, requiring only the replacement of the control segment without altering the airbag cover or necessitating the vehicle's return to Italy for the modification.

This decision by Ferrari is not an isolated incident within the automotive industry. Several manufacturers, spanning both mainstream and luxury segments, have publicly conceded that the transition from physical controls to capacitive or touchscreen-based interfaces often led to a less satisfactory user experience. Consequently, a growing number of automakers are now pivoting back towards integrating more physical controls into their upcoming vehicle designs, highlighting a renewed appreciation for ergonomics and driver interaction.

Ferrari's proactive step in offering a retrofit for previously sold models, rather than just implementing changes in new releases, underscores a commitment to customer satisfaction. This demonstrates that the company is attentive to its clientele's preferences and willing to invest in rectifying past design choices to enhance the driving experience. Such customer-centric actions contribute significantly to maintaining brand loyalty and reinforce the idea that practical usability remains paramount, even in the realm of high-performance luxury automobiles.
