Expert Predicts Tesla Stock Decline, Options Market Reacts with Massive Bet

As Tesla's earnings announcement approaches, a well-known financial expert is signaling a potential drop in the company's stock value. This prediction is being echoed in the financial markets, where a substantial amount of capital has been positioned to benefit from a decline.

Market Skepticism Mounts as Key Earnings Report Nears

Veteran Analyst Forecasts Tesla Stock Downturn

Carter Worth, a highly respected figure in the financial world and a regular on CNBC, has indicated that technical analysis of Tesla's stock chart suggests an impending fall. His insights, often shared as the "Chart Master," carry considerable weight within the investment community. This week, his warning about Tesla's trajectory has drawn significant attention.

Options Market Reacts with Significant Bearish Bet

In a notable move, the options market has aligned with Worth's bearish outlook, placing approximately $550 million in bets against Tesla shares just before the earnings release. This considerable wager highlights a strong market expectation for a volatile price movement. The implied volatility, currently in the 78th percentile for the past year, further underscores the anticipation of a major shift. Moreover, hedging activities are intensifying, evidenced by a rising put/call volume ratio, which jumped from 0.54 to 0.74 in just two weeks, signaling increased demand for protective put options.

Institutional Money Flow Turns Negative for Tesla

Further supporting the cautious stance, the Chaikin Money Flow (CMF), a key indicator of institutional investment trends, has shown a consistent decline since March. It recently dipped below zero, suggesting that sellers are now dominating one of July's most actively observed stocks. While some lagged data from the previous quarter indicated institutional buying, reflecting an increase of 226 million shares and a 31% rise in share count, these figures are not real-time. Despite the increased share count, the total value of these holdings actually decreased by over $1 billion due to falling prices, and the flow was far from one-sided, with a significant number of sellers offsetting buyers.

Analysts Maintain Bullish Outlook Despite Market Doubts

Despite the growing skepticism in certain market segments, several prominent Wall Street investment banks, including UBS, RBC, and Roth Capital, have raised their price targets for Tesla throughout July. JPMorgan also increased its target from $145 to $475 in June, buoyed by the company's robotaxi developments, and has yet to revise this target. However, this optimism is not universally shared; nine out of eighteen top analysts still recommend a "Hold" rating, with some, like Wells Fargo, even issuing a "Sell" recommendation at $130, indicating that Worth is not alone in his reservations.

Strong Deliveries May Not Be Enough to Propel Tesla Stock

The crucial point lies in the upcoming earnings report. Tesla has already announced record second-quarter deliveries, a factor that is likely already incorporated into the stock's current price. The market's reaction will now largely depend on profit margins and updates regarding the robotaxi program. Historical data suggests that even positive earnings surprises might not guarantee a stock rally; Tesla has missed earnings expectations in two of its last four quarters, and even in quarters where it beat estimates, the stock often declined due to cautious guidance from management. A clear example was the previous quarter, where an earnings beat led to a 52-week low after management signaled higher spending. With Jim Cramer, a well-known financial personality, advising investors to scale back on big tech ahead of earnings, the upcoming report will be a pivotal moment to see if the optimistic analyst targets or the veteran's cautious stance will prevail.
