This feature explores the timeless appeal and modern interpretations of amulets and talismans, tracing their origins from ancient civilizations to their current manifestation in contemporary culture. It delves into the spiritual significance these objects hold for individuals, offering insights into how they serve as symbols of protection, intention, and connection across different eras.

Unlocking Ancient Wisdom: The Contemporary Resonance of Sacred Objects

The Echoes of Antiquity: A Journey into Spiritual Protection

In November 1922, the renowned archaeologist Howard Carter made a remarkable discovery in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. As he illuminated the dark passage of a tomb, a peek through a small opening revealed what he famously described as “wonderful things.” Among the numerous artifacts found within King Tutankhamun's mummy wrappings were over a hundred objects, including a rich assortment of amulets. Carter identified these as protective charms meant to safeguard the pharaoh on his voyage through the underworld. These sacred items, featuring scarabs, serpents, vultures, lunar symbols, and deities like Horus and Anubis, were meticulously crafted from gold and lapis lazuli and strategically placed on the body.

Modern Spirituality's Embrace: Ancient Practices in a Digital Age

Over three millennia later, such symbolic artifacts are far from obsolete; they continue to play a vital role in our collective spiritual journey. A glance at contemporary digital platforms, such as TikTok, confirms this enduring fascination. As reported by Vogue Business, the “#WitchTok” hashtag alone boasts over nine million videos, reflecting a widespread interest. The popularity of tarot, crystals, astrology, talismans, and other forms of spiritual engagement has permeated mainstream culture in recent years. Tarot reader Cory Sargeant Boehr notes, “The essence of genuine spiritual work is rooted in a continuous tradition, but our interaction with these practices naturally changes with societal evolution.”

A Skeptic's Fascination: The Irresistible Pull of Protective Charms

My own curiosity regarding amulets and talismans presents a peculiar paradox. While I maintain a deep skepticism toward the metaphysical, I find myself irresistibly drawn to it. I am captivated by rituals; as a child, I would instinctively make the Sign of the Cross, intrigued by its sacramental nature, despite not being Catholic. Yet, if someone at a gathering passionately discusses the merits of zodiac signs or crystal healing, my inner cynic readily emerges. However, when it comes to objects designed for protection, I feel an unexpected and enthusiastic endorsement.

Defining the Sacred: Amulets, Talismans, and Their Empowered Purpose

The distinction between an amulet and a talisman primarily lies in whether the object is naturally endowed with power or has been ritually imbued with it. In Claude Lecouteux's work, The High Magic of Talismans and Amulets—a book he suggests reading in public to spark conversation—he explains that an amulet possesses “natural virtues,” whereas a talisman is an object “invested with magic powers thanks to a ritual compelling.” Both serve protective functions, and in modern usage, Lecouteux notes that “talisman” has become a broader term for any magical object. Donnie Soddu, a shamanic practitioner and founder of High Light Rituals, elaborates that a talisman is a physical item given a spiritual purpose. She states, “It might be created for protection, courage, abundance, clarity, or to help someone stay connected to any particular intention or part of themselves.” Soddu creates jewelry talismans for their wearability, describing them as “a physical anchor, or a reminder, that helps bring physical form to energy work.”

Inherited Comfort: The Worry Stone's Journey from Grief to Guidance

Following the loss of his grandmother, jewelry designer Presley Oldham discovered a rock in her desk, an item she had kept for as long as he could recall. “She would hold it as a sort of meditative object while working,” he shared. The rock fit perfectly in the palm, with a natural indentation for a thumb. “I’m sure she picked it up on a walk somewhere for this exact reason,” he speculates, noting the solace it provided him during his grieving process. When Oldham began crafting his initial cast pieces, he molded this cherished rock and reimagined it as a pendant, slightly reshaping it. “I had been calling it a ‘worry stone’ and the name just stuck,” he recounts. “It felt like the perfect name for the piece and what it has the power to do.” He considers it a talisman and intends for his new hand-carved gem Worry Stones, fashioned from various crystals, to serve a similar purpose.

The Transformative Touch: Personal Connection to Sacred Stones

“Each stone possesses its unique texture and striation, gradually transforming through the owner's touch over time,” he explains, referring to both its physical and emotional evolution. The pendant is designed to fit comfortably in the hand, inviting users to hold it and channel their emotions into it. “For me, that embodies a talisman—an object that enables you to transmute your feelings.” Soddu highlights the ancient association of stones with energetic, medicinal, protective, and symbolic qualities. She utilizes gemstones as “spiritual allies,” acting as a conduit between her clients and the spiritual realm. “Often, a stone will present itself for a specific purpose or intention, and I use that insight to guide the creation of the talisman,” she elaborates. After its creation, Soddu conducts a ceremony to consecrate and activate the piece according to its intended purpose, then offers guidance on how and when to wear it, along with its affirmation. “The stone itself is important, but the relationship and the ritual surrounding it are equally significant.”

Beyond the Tangible: Scent as a Modern Talisman

Historically, talismans and amulets have encompassed a diverse array of objects beyond stones and jewelry, including rabbit feet, four-leaf clovers, arrows, evil eyes, animal teeth, and astrological seals. For Alice Wells and Jennifer Francis, co-founders of Kindred Black, even scent can hold talismanic power. “Throughout human history, rituals almost invariably incorporate the burning of something fragrant,” Francis observes. Their studio is adorned with various talismans—a horseshoe above the entrance, a carved serpent guarding a window, a lucky dart in a corner—yet when they embarked on designing a home collection, they continually returned to the concept of shaping atmosphere through fragrance. Wells notes, “Many ingredients have been used for millennia for their spiritual and protective attributes.” She cites neroli for easing anxiety, lilac for welcoming new beginnings, and rose and sandalwood for attracting love. “Just as we surround ourselves with objects that evoke certain feelings, the fragrances we choose can be equally potent and impactful.”

Crafting Connection: Ancient Artistry and Intentional Scents

All of Kindred Black's glass vessels and home accessories are crafted by master glassblowers. “They employ the same ancient alchemical process that has transformed sand into form for over two millennia,” Francis explains, adding that glass was once believed to be an ideal medium for invoking visions. “Our largest candles feature substantial solid glass orb tops, reminiscent of Victorian scrying orbs.” Soddu advocates for embracing multiple talismans, as each can be “programmed” to address a specific need. “As we navigate different phases of life, we may require varied forms of support,” she says. While some talismans might foster a lifelong connection, others may be respectfully retired as individuals enter new chapters. Talismans can also act as conduits for manifestation. “As a tarot reader, I profoundly believe in the power of intention to shape our reality,” Sargeant Boehr states, “and physical objects can become potent vessels for those intentions.” For someone seeking love, she might suggest keeping an extra toothbrush at home for a future partner, thereby giving a desire a tangible presence before its full realization. “This allows the subconscious to begin perceiving that future as possible—even as something already in motion—which can influence how we navigate the world and the decisions we make.”

The Enduring Legacy: A Shared Human Tradition

From my perspective, the most compelling aspect of owning a talisman is the profound link it offers to our ancestors and the ancient world. While I may not be interred with Egyptian winged beetles over my heart (though perhaps I will be!), participating in this age-old tradition provides an indescribable sense of belonging. The enduring power of the talisman, I would argue, lies in its remarkable adaptability. Sargeant Boehr, who has managed a PR company for a decade, observes, “What I find particularly fascinating now is that many spiritual practitioners—myself included—come from careers traditionally perceived as distinct from spirituality.” She concludes, “We are able to integrate those skill sets into our spiritual work, which I believe is fostering a more grounded and contemporary approach—one that honors ancient or intuitive practices while making them practical and relevant for how people live today.”
