A new film by the Golden Leopard-winning director Andrea Štaka, titled 'Ibicaba: O Paraíso Prometido,' is set to feature a distinguished cast including Ella Rumpf, Júlio Andrade, and Ana Flávia Cavalcanti. This cinematic venture is a co-production effort between Brazil's MyMama Entertainment, Switzerland's Cinédokké Sagl, and Brazil's MMM Carioca. The narrative is an adaptation of Eveline Hasler's novel, 'Ibicaba: O Paraíso nas Cabeças,' which delves into factual occurrences at a rural São Paulo farm in the year 1855, with filming scheduled for the upcoming year in Switzerland and Cordeirópolis, São Paulo.

The historical drama transports viewers to 1855, following a Swiss working-class single mother who journeys to Brazil, envisioning a life of prosperity. Instead, she is confronted by a brutal system of exploitation, debt, and constant surveillance, deeply embedded within a society structured by slavery. Her journey intertwines with that of Inocência, an enslaved Black woman endowed with traditional healing wisdom and a deep understanding of the land, who employs her unique methods of resistance. The film's historical accuracy is bolstered by research from Caróu Oliveira, a historian specializing in 19th-century slavery and the daily lives of Black women. Štaka's connection to this story originates from her youth, having discovered Hasler's novel as an adolescent, and she has been diligently learning Portuguese to foster direct communication with her cast and crew, thereby enhancing the authenticity of character dialogues and experiences.

MyMama Entertainment, co-founded and led by CEO Mayra Faour Auad, is described as an international production company. Auad emphasizes their commitment to collaborating with auteurs whose stories resonate deeply, regardless of their origin, and their ability to secure funding from diverse global markets. She also highlights the increasing trend of international productions choosing Brazil as a filming location, not merely for its scenic versatility but for its rich cultural backdrop, skilled local talent, and attractive regional incentives, making it an ideal setting for narratives such as 'Ibicaba.' Beyond this project, MyMama Entertainment is actively engaged in other productions, including João Paulo Miranda Maria’s 'I Don’t Even Know Who I Was,' starring Selton Mello, and Pia Marais’s 'Whyte Lies,' marking Marais's return to filming in Brazil after 'Transamazonia.'

The commitment to authentic storytelling, coupled with international collaborations and a focus on socially relevant historical narratives, showcases the transformative potential of cinema. Such productions not only bring untold stories to light but also bridge cultural divides, promoting understanding and empathy. The dedication of filmmakers like Andrea Štaka and producers like Mayra Faour Auad exemplifies how art can illuminate the past and inspire a more just and interconnected future.
