In an unprecedented move within the gaming industry, "Dispatch," the episodic superhero narrative game, has secured eligibility for The Game Awards for a remarkable second consecutive year. This announcement comes despite the game's full first season having concluded prior to the eligibility deadline for the 2025 awards, prompting discussions about award criteria and fairness.

Representatives from AdHoc Studio, the developers behind "Dispatch," confirmed this unique situation, stating that The Game Awards owner and host, Geoff Keighley, personally verified the game's eligibility for the 2026 awards. This decision is particularly noteworthy given that all eight episodes of the first season were released by November 12, 2025, predating the November 21 eligibility cutoff for the 2025 event.

The unusual circumstances surrounding "Dispatch's" eligibility stem from its initial run. During the 2025 awards cycle, judges had only experienced a portion of the game's narrative when nominations were being considered. AdHoc Studio revealed that despite this, "Dispatch" received a nomination for Best Debut Indie Game. The studio attributed this to their policy of not providing early access copies to the press, meaning jury members were still immersed in the ongoing story as voting commenced.

The developers' desire for a second consideration is understandable, especially given the game's subsequent performance at other prestigious awards ceremonies. While it secured a Debut Indie Game nomination at The Game Awards, "Dispatch" garnered significant recognition later, after the full impact of its complete season could be assessed. The game received six nominations at the DICE Awards, including Game of the Year; three at the Game Developers Choice Awards; and ultimately won three BAFTA Games Awards, alongside a Best Game nomination.

Despite this renewed opportunity, "Dispatch" may still face challenges in securing major nominations at the 2026 Game Awards. The jury is known for its stringent application of eligibility criteria, often overlooking titles like early-access games or expansion packs, even when technically eligible. Games released late in the preceding year, after the previous year's eligibility window, also rarely receive recognition in subsequent cycles.

Nevertheless, this announcement provides a fresh chance for one of 2025's most critically acclaimed titles to compete for top honors, offering a surprising twist in the often-predictable world of video game awards. It highlights the complexities of evaluating episodic content and the potential for a game's full narrative arc to resonate more deeply over time.
