"The Blood of Dawnwalker," the upcoming open-world vampire role-playing game from Polish developer Rebel Wolves, openly acknowledges its roots in "The Witcher 3." After a four-hour play session, the influences are unmistakable, yet the game distinguishes itself with fresh concepts rather than merely replicating its predecessor. This initial experience suggests that Rebel Wolves has crafted an impressively robust debut title, exceeding expectations for a studio's first major RPG offering.

The game's compelling narrative begins with a three-hour introductory sequence, establishing a bleak atmosphere. Players are introduced to Coen, the protagonist, before his transformation into a Vrakhiri, a vampire. His village lives under the peculiar rule of Brencis, a decaying but relatively lenient overlord who demands a pint of blood from each citizen every full moon. This demand, though less burdensome than constant labor, causes distress, as illustrated by Coen's mother, Esme, who is incapacitated by fear before an upcoming blood donation. The game's innovative time system plays a crucial role in these early stages, dividing each day into eight segments. Every action or quest consumes one or more segments, forcing players to make strategic choices within a limited timeframe. This system, akin to Persona's calendar mechanics but with greater narrative depth, ensures that decisions about where and how to spend time have meaningful consequences, shaping the unfolding story rather than merely presenting a series of optional tasks. One such early choice involves retrieving medicine for Coen's mother, navigating village politics, and even confronting a bully, with every interaction contributing to the game's immersive world.

While the game excels in its narrative and choice-driven design, the combat system presents a mixed experience. In human form, Coen's combat mirrors the mechanics of "Kingdom Come Deliverance," requiring precise strikes and blocks with a longsword. Although simplified compared to its inspiration, the combat in this form is functional but lacks a truly engaging quality, particularly when facing multiple adversaries who tend to attack sequentially rather than cooperatively. However, the vampiric combat introduces more dynamic elements, allowing Coen to utilize his blood-fueled abilities for rapid movement and surprise attacks. These vampiric powers, tied directly to blood consumption, offer unique strategic advantages and add a layer of depth to encounters, though the core hand-to-hand mechanics remain largely consistent. Beyond combat, Coen's vampire form also enables vertical traversal, scaling walls and descending treacherous surfaces. The consequences of vampirism extend to dialogue, where a hungry Coen risks inadvertently draining conversational partners. Rebel Wolves has evidently poured considerable effort into crafting a visually stunning and narratively rich world, characterized by gothic ruins, murky swamps, and snow-capped mountains. The game's unflinching tone and immersive storytelling create a compelling experience, hinting at a potential RPG highlight for 2026, provided that players are given ample opportunities to navigate challenges through dialogue as well as combat.

This game thoughtfully explores themes of difficult choices and the complexities of power dynamics in a medieval setting. It encourages players to consider the long-term impact of their decisions within a dark, yet captivating world, ultimately promoting a sense of accountability and the understanding that true heroism often lies in navigating moral ambiguities with courage and conviction.
