David Brevik, a prominent figure in the gaming world and co-creator of the legendary title Diablo, shares insights into his extensive career and personal gaming journey. From his formative years influenced by Apple II classics to spearheading one of gaming's most influential RPGs, Brevik's narrative is a testament to his enduring passion. He opens up about the unexpected resurgence of his game Marvel Heroes through dedicated fans, his cherished family tradition of playing Minecraft, and his unwavering affection for the venerable EverQuest. Brevik's reflections provide a unique perspective on the evolution of gaming and the personal connections players form with digital worlds.

The Odyssey of a Game Developer: David Brevik's Journey Through Interactive Worlds

Before the ubiquitous presence of the IBM PC, a young David Brevik embarked on his gaming odyssey, captivated by early Apple II titles such as Lode Runner and The Oregon Trail. He recounts a profound impact from the original Wizardry, a game he cherished on his Apple II Plus, noting its foundational influence on his design philosophy.

Brevik's academic pursuit of computer science naturally led him to the burgeoning software and gaming industries. His career path ultimately converged with the co-founding of Condor, a studio that would later become Blizzard North. Here, he contributed to titles like NFL Quarterback Club and Justice League Task Force. A pivotal moment arrived with his pitch for Diablo to Blizzard Entertainment. Initially met with modest sales expectations, Diablo transcended its initial scope to become a monumental success, reshaping the landscape of action role-playing games.

Following his departure from Blizzard in 2003, Brevik continued his innovative streak, designing games such as Marvel Heroes and It Lurks Below. Today, he holds the presidency at Skystone Games, a publishing house behind titles like Tiny Bookshop and Mistfall Hunter. Amidst his current endeavors, Brevik recently took a moment to guide an interviewer through the digital archives of his Steam library.

Remarkably, Brevik's most frequently played recent game is his own creation, Marvel Heroes, an ARPG set in the Marvel universe from the early 2010s. After his departure and the game's subsequent shutdown, a dedicated community of fans resurrected it on a custom server. Brevik now enjoys this fan-maintained version, often streaming his gameplay and reconnecting with the community. He notes the post-release changes, particularly the 'Omega' update that streamlined skill trees, altering some character dynamics. Despite perceived flaws, he finds joy in its replayability, appreciating the vast roster of over 60 characters, with Thing, Iron Fist, Deadpool, Elektra, and Thor being his personal favorites.

His previous gaming escapade involved a familiar return to Minecraft, a game he frequently plays with family and friends. As a grandfather, he cherishes the tradition of starting new servers with his grown children, building elaborate contraptions together. This cyclical engagement reflects the evolving dynamics of family gaming over the years.

When questioned about the oldest game perpetually installed on his PC, Brevik fondly recalled Eye of the Beholder. Released in 1991, this title deeply immersed him with its pseudo-3D graphics and grid-based, turn-based dungeon crawling. He meticulously mapped out its levels on graph paper. Despite its abrupt ending – a simple "Congratulations, you win!" followed by a desktop exit – he maintains a deep affection for the game, labeling it an "amazing" experience despite its narrative conclusion.

Regarding his most invested game hours on Steam, Marvel Heroes leads with 540 hours, closely followed by It Lurks Below at 529 hours, and No Man's Sky exceeding 400 hours. His affinity for space-themed games explains his continued engagement with No Man's Sky, drawn in by its exploration, base building, and continuous updates, though he found its story somewhat detached.

Beyond Steam, Brevik's enduring loyalty lies with EverQuest, a game he refuses to uninstall. Along with World of Warcraft, it consumed years of his life, often shared with his wife. He still revisits the classic 'EQ '99' servers, leveling up characters. He likens its groundbreaking impact to the original Star Wars, acknowledging its painful difficulty and infamous player anecdotes, such as a memorable dragon run where continuous respawns led him to disconnect his internet in frustration.

Away from gaming, Brevik considers Visual Studio indispensable. As a programmer who still dreams of creating new games, he prototypes ideas almost daily, hoping to one day dedicate more time to a full project. His desktop, however, is a chaotic testament to his many engagements: a jumble of game icons, development tools, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft applications, mobile game PC versions, and countless notes from providing feedback on various projects. His desktop, he admits, is "a complete mess," adorned with approximately 300 icons.

The journey through David Brevik's gaming universe illuminates not only the evolution of a seasoned game developer but also the profound personal connections forged through interactive experiences. His passion extends beyond creation, embracing the joy of play, the nostalgia of classics, and the collaborative spirit of gaming communities. It’s a vivid reminder that at the heart of groundbreaking innovation often lies a deep and abiding love for the craft, coupled with a willingness to engage with its past, present, and future.
