The cryptocurrency market, particularly Bitcoin and Ethereum, faced a notable downturn on Friday, July 24, 2026. This decline was primarily influenced by substantial outflows from Bitcoin spot exchange-traded funds and an upward trend in U.S. Treasury yields. Despite these immediate market pressures, the broader conversation around integrating digital currencies into traditional financial sectors, such as the housing market, continues to gain momentum.

Cryptocurrency Markets Recede as Treasury Yields Rise; Housing Integration Explored

On the morning of Friday, July 24, 2026, the cryptocurrency market witnessed a dip in value, impacting both Bitcoin and Ethereum. Bitcoin commenced trading at $65,047.87, reflecting a 1.6% decrease from the previous day's open, and further slid to $64,304.50 by 9:13 a.m. ET. Similarly, Ethereum initiated the day at $1,876.92, marking a 2.9% reduction from Thursday, eventually trading at $1,860.78 by 9:14 a.m. ET.

This market retraction coincided with Bitcoin spot ETFs recording net outflows of $225 million on Thursday, interrupting a week-long positive streak that had garnered approximately $999 million in net inflows, according to Coinglass data. The primary catalysts for this shift were escalating oil prices and the introduction of new tariff policies, which collectively heightened inflation expectations. These factors subsequently propelled U.S. Treasury yields upward, making less risky assets more appealing to institutional investors and drawing capital away from cryptocurrencies.

Neither Bitcoin nor Ethereum offers inherent interest payments, which positions them at a disadvantage when interest rates climb, thereby increasing their opportunity cost. While Ethereum does allow for staking rewards, these come with additional risks for holders.

Looking at the historical performance, Bitcoin's price on this particular Friday was down 1.6% from Thursday's opening. Over the past week, it saw a 2% gain, and a 3.8% increase over the month. However, its value was 45.2% lower compared to one year ago. Bitcoin reached its peak at $126,198.07 on October 6, 2025, and its lowest point was $0.04865 on July 14, 2010.

Ethereum also experienced a 2.9% drop from Thursday's open. Its performance over the past periods shows a 0.7% rise in the last week and a 12.7% increase over the last month. Yet, it stood 48.3% lower than its price a year ago. Ethereum's all-time high was recorded at $4,953.73 on August 24, 2025, with its all-time low at $0.4209 on October 21, 2015.

Beyond the immediate market fluctuations, a significant development emerged from Washington. President Trump expressed a vision for the United States to lead the global crypto landscape. In line with this, in late June, William J. Pulte, Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), instructed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to prepare for the inclusion of cryptocurrency as a legitimate asset for mortgage qualification. The FHFA oversees these government-sponsored enterprises, which play a crucial role in the mortgage industry. Pulte emphasized the need for a modernized housing system, advocating for cryptocurrency owners' ability to purchase homes, believing digital assets should be recognized and utilized by Americans in real estate transactions.

This directive suggests a potentially transformative shift in how digital currencies might be leveraged for mortgage eligibility, bridging the gap between innovative financial technology and conventional real estate practices.

The recent market movements in Bitcoin and Ethereum, juxtaposed with the evolving discussions around cryptocurrency's role in the housing sector, highlight a fascinating dichotomy. On one hand, the sensitivity of digital assets to macroeconomic factors like rising Treasury yields underscores their inherent volatility and the ongoing challenges in establishing their stability as a primary investment vehicle for institutional players. The substantial outflows from Bitcoin ETFs serve as a clear indicator of how quickly investor sentiment can shift in response to perceived safer alternatives. On the other hand, the proactive stance taken by governmental figures like William J. Pulte in exploring crypto's integration into the housing market signals a growing recognition of its long-term potential and a move towards greater mainstream adoption. This indicates that despite short-term fluctuations, the foundational impact of cryptocurrencies on traditional finance is undeniable and continues to be explored at high levels. Investors and policymakers alike are navigating a complex landscape where rapid technological innovation meets established financial paradigms, pushing for a future where digital assets could play a more integral role in everyday economic activities, such as homeownership.
