At this year's Gen Con, a prominent gathering for tabletop gaming enthusiasts, several significant announcements were made, capturing the attention of players across various systems. Among the highlights was the unveiling of a fresh campaign from Critical Role, a highly popular actual-play role-playing collective within the industry. Their publishing division, Darrington Press, not only shared exciting developments for their game Daggerheart, including upcoming accessories and partnerships, but also sparked considerable interest with news of a new miniseries.

Gen Con Unveils "Reign of the Weredragon" with Chris Perkins at the Helm

The newly announced miniseries, titled Reign of the Weredragon, is set to be an actual-play Daggerheart production. This series aims to meld the enchanting essence of traditional fairy tales with an unexpectedly dark and mysterious world. Although the cast remains a secret, it has been confirmed that Chris Perkins, currently the creative director at Darrington Press and a former creative director and game designer for Dungeons & Dragons, will lead the series. Perkins, renowned for his experience as a game master in front of the camera, previously served as the Dungeon Master for Wizards of the Coast's Dice, Camera, Action and Penny Arcade's long-running Acquisitions Incorporated. He co-created Reign of the Weredragon as a campaign setting within Daggerheart's initial expansion, Hope & Fear, making this actual-play show an ideal platform to introduce the new product to audiences. While the launch date for Reign of the Weredragon is still pending, it is anticipated to run concurrently with Critical Role's primary campaign, which traditionally utilizes the D&D system. In the interim, fans can continue to enjoy ongoing content, such as Age of Umbra: Sallowlands, a gothic-themed Daggerheart adventure featuring notable voice talents, which is scheduled to conclude in mid-August. The next installment of Age of Umbra: Sallowlands will be accessible on Twitch, YouTube, and Beacon.tv at 7 p.m. PDT, with Campaign 4 set to resume on August 27th.

This latest announcement signifies Critical Role's continued expansion and innovation within the tabletop gaming landscape. By bringing on board a veteran like Chris Perkins for Reign of the Weredragon, Darrington Press demonstrates a commitment to delivering high-quality, engaging content that broadens the appeal of Daggerheart and enriches the actual-play experience. The blend of familiar fairy tale tropes with a darker twist promises a unique narrative journey, inviting both long-time 'Critters' and new players to explore this eerie new world. The strategic release of this miniseries alongside the Hope & Fear expansion suggests a well-thought-out plan to introduce and popularize new game mechanics and lore, further solidifying Critical Role's influence in the tabletop RPG community.
