Busan Market Bolsters Documentary Support and Announces Festival Host
The Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), an integral part of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), is poised to launch Doc Square 2026, a four-day event from October 10-13. This initiative aims to foster connections between Asian documentary creators and industry professionals, showcasing projects in production and offering strategic guidance. The program's core, the Documentary WIP Showcase, operates in conjunction with the Asian Cinema Fund's Asian Network of Documentary (AND) Fund, and includes collaborations with partner organizations from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. This year marks the addition of Newstapa Foundation and Japan's J-Docs Hub as new partners, joining established participants such as Taiwan Docs, the Taiwan Creative Content Agency, the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, Docs by the Sea, and the Film Development Council of the Philippines. This year's Doc Square introduces two significant new awards: the Impact Asia Award and the Newstapa Award. The Impact Asia Award will recognize three projects, each receiving a $5,000 prize. The Newstapa Award will grant one project KRW10 million (approximately $7,400) and the opportunity for a 60-minute version of their film to be streamed on the Newstapa Foundation's website and YouTube channel. It will feature case studies from Korea, Taiwan, and Japan, which will be compiled into an 80-page report available at the venue. The Korean study analyzes approximately 2,800 films released between 1988 and 2025, complemented by a survey of 88 creators and interviews with 19 industry experts. The Taiwan study chronicles the journey of "Small Talk" from its theatrical debut to its subsequent use in educational and public screening contexts. The Japan study examines the remarkable box-office success of "What Should We Have Done?" and its strategy for cultivating audience engagement through mini-theaters, festivals, and independent screenings.
Beyond these highlights, Doc Square will offer additional sessions covering vital aspects of documentary filmmaking, including co-production, festival strategies, and funding. The Documentary Festival & Fund Talk on October 10 will bring together international festival programmers and funders. The Current State of Documentary Co-Production will feature an Asia-focused session on October 10 and a Korea-centric session on October 11. On the final day, the "AND Talk & Share" session will provide a private workshop for this year's AND Fund recipients to discuss challenges and solutions for completing their projects.

Yim, who made his debut in the 2012 series "Moon Embracing the Sun" and transitioned to film with "The Attorney" in 2013, has earned critical acclaim for his versatile performances, including his role as Jang Geu-rae in "Misaeng" (2014) and appearances in "The Merciless" (2017), "Run On" (2020), "Boyhood" (2023), and "Unlocked" (2023). He also joined the cast of "Squid Game" for Seasons 2 and 3 and featured in the 2025 film "Mantis."
