Bungie Introduces Vault Breaker Mode to Marathon

In an effort to invigorate its title, Bungie is rolling out an innovative experimental PvE experience, dubbed Vault Breaker, for its extraction shooter, Marathon. This new feature is part of a mid-season update scheduled for July 21, aiming to sustain player engagement as the studio transitions from its previous flagship project, Destiny 2.

The upcoming Marathon version 1.1.5 will introduce the Vault Breaker mode, sending players into the game's Cryo Archive. Described as a 'roguelite PvE experience,' participants will confront progressively more difficult Vaults through multiple runs. Success in these endeavors will yield Vault Data, which can be utilized to enhance their Sponsored Kit or exchanged for new equipment at the Vault Breaker Armory. This new arsenal, comprising weapons and items, can then be integrated into other missions across Tau Ceti. Players have the flexibility to tackle these Vaults solo, as a pair, or in a full trio.

Bungie elaborates that Vault Breakers are characterized by their swift, strategic engagements, focusing on uncovering the secrets held within the Marathon’s Cryo Archive. These operatives prioritize agility, targeting numerous Vaults to secure valuable resources and deepen their access within the game's structure. Their methods are designed to challenge the UESC’s authority aboard the Marathon, creating continuous pressure and forcing the defense of the zone against player incursions. These strategic strikes occur during quieter periods, when rival factions are preoccupied with Tau Ceti IV, allowing for more focused maneuvers without the interference of a contested zone.

The Vault Breaker event is slated to run from July 21 until August 4. This initiative precedes the full PvE mode for Marathon, which is anticipated to launch with Season 3.
