Enthusiast Huang Lu disseminated a video showcasing this non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) on social media, sparking considerable interest. Staff at the exhibition stated that configuring the system for each participant required only about five minutes.

According to a press release from WAIC, this system operates by capturing and deciphering neural signals, subsequently translating the user's mental intentions into commands for devices. Beyond gaming, this foundational technology is being explored for diverse applications, including sleep monitoring, early detection of epileptic seizures, and anesthesia management, highlighting its broad potential across medical and technological domains.

Unlike other BCI systems that demand users to conjure specific mental imagery to trigger brain regions—such as streamer PerriKaryal's EmotivBCI setup, which involves thinking of a cricket jumping to execute in-game dodges—the WAIC 2026 exhibit employs a different mechanism. This system leverages Steady-State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP). Various targets, integrated into the game's display, flash at distinct frequencies. Huang Lu elaborated that the brain generates unique electroencephalogram (EEG) signals in response to these visual stimuli, which a specialized headset detects and converts into precise in-game actions. While this offers an exciting avenue for accessibility, particularly for gamers with restricted mobility, concerns regarding potential impacts on individuals with photo-sensitive epilepsy due to the flashing targets warrant further investigation.

Latency remains a critical hurdle for BCI technologies. However, prior demonstrations, such as PerriKaryal's triumph over 'Black Myth: Wukong's' second boss, Linguxi, using only thought and occasional voice commands, illustrate the feasibility of overcoming such challenges. Furthermore, BrainCo at WAIC 2026 presented another non-invasive BCI, enabling users with EEG headsets to remotely operate robotic limbs and humanoid robots. Their press release detailed that users don an EEG headset to capture brain signals, which AI algorithms then decode to discern motor or control intentions, translating them into robotic commands in less than 200 milliseconds. Despite this rapid response, a 2-millisecond delay can still be substantial in scenarios demanding instantaneous reactions, such as preventing a falling object, underscoring the ongoing need for advancements in reducing latency.
