Bombillo Amarillo, the acclaimed Medellín-based animation studio renowned for its role in co-producing the Annecy Cristal award-winning film 'The Violinist,' is set to expand its global footprint by inaugurating a new animation studio in Spain. The new entity, named BA Estudios, is slated to commence operations in Bilbao, the vibrant capital of Bizkaia in Spain's Basque Country, starting from July 13. This move signifies a pivotal moment for the Colombian studio, marking its direct entry into the European animation market.
A Decade of Artistic Contribution and Technical Prowess
Established in 2010, Bombillo Amarillo has built a formidable reputation as a provider of comprehensive 2D and 3D animation services. For 'The Violinist,' the studio was instrumental in delivering approximately nine minutes of animation, encompassing detailed layouts, evocative backgrounds, character animation, and significant post-production and effects work. Beyond its award-winning feature film contribution, Bombillo Amarillo has lent its expertise to notable projects including Netflix's neo-medieval Polish adventure comedy series 'Kayko y Kokosh,' contributed backgrounds for Prime Video's 'The Boys,' crafted characters and rigs for Cartoon Network’s 'Los Colorado,' and handled the entirety of the animation for Netflix's soccer biopic 'James.'
Strategic Expansion Amidst Evolving Industry Dynamics
According to CEO Daniel Vélez, BA Estudios is poised to engage in both original animation title production and service work. This expansion into Bilbao is particularly timely given the current climate where global streaming services and U.S. animation orders have seen a notable decline, partly due to the increasing consumption of animated content on platforms like YouTube. Vélez emphasized the critical importance of production quality in such an environment, highlighting Europe's long-standing tradition of high artistic productions, exemplified by films like the Oscar-nominated 'Robot Dreams' and 'The Violinist.' The studio aims to harness Europe's creative capacity while integrating it with their own, forging a 'best of both worlds' approach.
Leveraging International Co-production and Tax Incentives
As traditional animation markets face contraction, European companies are increasingly exploring alternative financing models through international co-productions and tax incentives. Colombia offers some of Latin America's most attractive tax breaks, which, when combined with Bizkaia's generous tax credits (up to 60% of investment, or 70% if production occurs in Basque), present a compelling financial framework. Vélez noted that BA Estudios will significantly enhance Bombillo Amarillo's market reach, facilitating smoother collaboration within Europe compared to operating solely from Latin America. He also pointed out Colombia’s capacity to bring further investment, citing Bombillo Amarillo's use of risk capital for 'The Violinist.'
Colombia's Ascending Animation Profile
The announcement of Bombillo Amarillo's international expansion coincides with the 2026 Bogota Audiovisual Market, which is set to feature seven diverse Colombian animation titles. These range from intimate 2D narratives such as 'The Man Who Wanted to Be Better' to quasi-documentaries like 'A Piece of Peace,' social issue-driven works including 'From the Border Within' and 'Transparents,' a pre-school series 'Papoupi,' and stylish psychological horror with anime influences, 'Noa.' This burgeoning talent pool has not gone unnoticed; France's Annecy Festival recognized Colombia's animation prowess by naming it the 2027 Country of Honor on June 26. Vélez expressed profound pride in 'The Violinist's' Annecy triumph, viewing it as concrete proof that Colombia can compete at the highest international standards in storytelling. He underscored the robust institutional support available to Colombia's animation industry, mentioning key entities such as Proimagenes, Comfama, El Pauer, the Medellín Chamber of Commerce, the Colombia Film Commission, various government ministries, and ProColombia. Vélez believes that all elements are aligning for Colombian animation, with the primary challenge now being the availability of sufficient qualified professionals to meet market demand.
