New details have emerged regarding Sony's planned distribution strategy for Sam Mendes' eagerly awaited series of films about The Beatles.

The cast portraying the iconic band members includes Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison, and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. These four distinct features are slated for release one week apart, all within a single month in 2028. Observant fans have already caught glimpses of the actors in costume filming across London, notably recreating the legendary Abbey Road album cover in August, a scene originally captured on August 8, 1969, featuring the band crossing a street outside EMI Studios.

Pippa Harris, Mendes' long-standing producing partner and co-founder of Neal Street Productions, offered a subtle update during a keynote session at the BFI London Film Festival's Industry Forum. She described the upcoming releases as a "four-film cinematic event" scheduled to unfold throughout April. Harris, who briefly stepped away from the film set for her appearance, noted that production was on its 180th day. When pressed for further details on the release strategy, she explained that while the films will be released in 2028, the intention is for audiences to experience them in cinemas within the same timeframe. She clarified that this doesn't necessitate watching all four in a single day, but rather enjoying them perhaps one per week, or two over a weekend. The hope is for viewers to engage with the entire collection, as each film explores the individual story of a band member, contributing to a powerful cumulative narrative. Harris emphasized that The Beatles, in her view, represent the pinnacle of musical artistry, and the four films aim to honor their legacy appropriately, a scale of storytelling rarely warranted for any other musical group.

Earlier in the session, Harris lightheartedly mentioned that the cast members have been explicitly advised against discussing the highly secretive project at public events, acknowledging the significant undertaking involved. Additional cast members include Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Cox, Ringo Starr's wife; Anna Sawai as Yoko Ono, John Lennon's wife; and Aimee Lou Wood as Pattie Boyd, George Harrison's wife. Saoirse Ronan is cast as Linda (Eastman) McCartney. Harris herself is a prominent figure in the British film and television sector, with a career spanning decades and including acclaimed productions such as Hamnet, 1917, and Call the Midwife. During her discussion with radio presenter Edith Bowman, she delved into her extensive career, shared insights for aspiring producers, and humorously touched upon her yet-to-be-received Oscar. The 70th BFI London Film Festival is scheduled from October 7-18.

This cinematic endeavor is more than just a series of biographical films; it's a testament to the enduring impact of The Beatles on global culture and music. By presenting each member's story individually yet collectively, the project aims to offer a multifaceted exploration of their lives, their artistry, and the complex dynamics that shaped their iconic status. Such a comprehensive approach not only enriches our understanding of the band but also reinforces the power of collaborative storytelling in celebrating historical and cultural milestones.
