Atari and Activision have announced a partnership to reintroduce a curated selection of 39 beloved games originally developed for the Atari 2600. These titles will be available on functional, physical cartridges, ensuring compatibility with both the vintage Atari 2600 and 7800 systems, as well as their contemporary counterparts.

Long before achieving global recognition for franchises like Call of Duty, Activision's origins were rooted in developing software for the Atari 2600. Established by former Atari personnel, the company was instrumental in creating some of the console's most celebrated works, including legendary titles such as 'Pitfall!' and 'River Raid.' Over time, particularly following its acquisition by Microsoft in 2023, Activision had somewhat distanced itself from these foundational roots. This new collaboration signifies a re-embrace of that rich history, making these previously hard-to-access historical gaming artifacts available to a new generation and devoted fans alike.

The upcoming Atari x Activision Collection will feature era-accurate cartridges designed to operate seamlessly on both the original classic consoles and the more recent Atari 2600+ and Atari 7800+ platforms. Initially, a dozen of the 39 games will be offered as Standard Edition cartridges, each retailing for $34.99. Titles such as 'Pitfall!', 'River Raid', 'Megamania', and 'Enduro' are slated for individual release in November, with 'The Activision Decathlon' and 'Pitfall 2: Lost Caverns' following at a later date.

For enthusiasts eager to acquire the full library, the path becomes a bit more intricate and significantly more costly. The remaining classic Activision titles will be exclusively available through four distinct Deluxe Box Sets. Each set will comprise between nine and ten games, priced at $249.99, with staggered release dates. The 'Treasure Collection,' launching in November 2026, includes 'Pitfall!' and 'River Raid.' The 'Speed Collection' in Spring 2027 will feature ten adrenaline-fueled games such as 'Enduro' and 'HERO.' The 'Secrets Collection,' arriving in Summer 2027, will offer nine classics including 'Kaboom!' and 'Keystone Kapers.' Finally, the 'Victory Collection' in Fall 2027 will round out the offering with ten titles like 'Pitfall II: Lost Caverns' and 'River Raid II.'

For the ultimate collector, a 'Complete Collection' encompassing all four box sets will be available for a substantial price of $999.96, which also promises an exclusive, unannounced collector's item. Pre-orders for the Standard Edition cartridges, the 'Treasure Collection,' and the 'Complete Collection' are now accessible directly through Atari's official website.
