In a groundbreaking move towards greater inclusivity, ASOS has unveiled its first adaptive fashion collection. This pioneering range, developed over two years in partnership with disabled customers and the expert accessibility consultancy, Tilting the Lens, founded by Sinéad Burke, seeks to address the significant gaps in the fashion market for disabled individuals. The initiative stems from extensive research highlighting the challenges faced by disabled shoppers, particularly concerning the limited availability of occasionwear and overall product accessibility. By integrating innovative design elements and prioritizing user comfort, ASOS aims to broaden its customer base and champion a more equitable fashion landscape.

ASOS Adaptive Collection: Bridging the Fashion Accessibility Gap

Today marks a significant milestone in inclusive fashion as ASOS, a prominent online retailer, officially launches its adaptive clothing line, “ASOS Adaptive.” This 51-piece collection, catering to both men and women across an extensive size range from XS to XXXL, is the culmination of a two-year collaborative effort. The project saw ASOS teams working hand-in-hand with Tilting the Lens, led by disabled educator Sinéad Burke, and directly engaging disabled consumers through focus groups. This comprehensive approach ensured that the designs were informed by genuine user needs and preferences.

The genesis of this collection dates back two years when Tilting the Lens, partially funded by ASOS, commenced work on an open-source whitepaper. This extensive study gathered insights from over 100 disabled individuals globally, revealing persistent issues such as difficulty in discovering suitable clothing, lack of product accessibility, and a severely restricted range of options, especially in formal wear. The survey also underscored that e-commerce platforms, customer service, packaging, and delivery often presented additional barriers. A resounding 86 percent of participants emphasized comfort and fit as their primary motivators for purchasing clothing.

Responding to these critical findings, ASOS Adaptive incorporates a variety of thoughtfully designed features. These include practical elements such as magnetic fastenings, concealed zippers, elasticated waistbands, discreet access points for medical tubes, hidden pockets for device storage, and carefully adjusted proportions. The collection primarily focuses on occasion and formal wear but also offers a selection of casual items like T-shirts and knit polos. All pieces are affordably priced, ranging from £32 to £65.

Beyond product development, the collaboration also involved comprehensive training for ASOS staff across various departments. Design teams received education on adaptive design principles and disability etiquette, while customer care teams were trained to handle specific accessibility issues. Studio teams, including stylists, copywriters, casting directors, photographers, and production staff, were also educated on disability etiquette, creating accessible sets, and ensuring informative product listings with appropriate imagery and descriptions. This holistic approach underscores ASOS’s commitment to embedding accessibility throughout its operations.

This strategic move allows ASOS to expand its reach into the substantial disability consumer market, estimated at $675 billion by Disability IN. While other brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Anthropologie have also ventured into adaptive clothing, ASOS differentiates itself by offering a lower price point. Sinéad Burke acknowledges potential concerns regarding fast fashion’s sustainability and quality but emphasizes that partnering with ASOS provides a more accessible entry point for many disabled individuals, given that adaptive clothing often comes with higher production costs and a premium price tag. She highlights that Tilting the Lens insisted on maintaining high standards of quality, tailoring, and fit throughout the development process.

Burke also points to the alarming statistic of high unemployment rates among disabled individuals (over 46% in the UK). She asserts that increasing disabled employment requires systemic changes, including accessible office environments, inclusive recruitment processes, reasonable adjustments, and, crucially, access to professional, comfortable, and affordable clothing. While ASOS has not yet committed to future adaptive collections, Burke remains optimistic that strong consumer demand will encourage its continuation. She envisions this collaboration as a potential blueprint for other brands to integrate adaptability into their business models, which is why the whitepaper developed by Tilting the Lens has been made an open-source resource. Burke hopes the collection will be embraced by both disabled and non-disabled customers for its beauty and utility.

The launch of ASOS Adaptive represents a pivotal moment in the fashion industry, demonstrating a tangible commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. This initiative not only provides stylish and functional clothing options for disabled individuals but also sets a precedent for how major retailers can meaningfully engage with underserved communities. By prioritizing comfort, thoughtful design, and affordability, ASOS is helping to dismantle barriers and foster a more equitable and diverse fashion landscape. This move underscores the immense potential and necessity of adaptive fashion, urging other brands to follow suit and recognize the value of designing for everyone.
