Ann Hui to Receive Camellia Award at Busan International Film Festival
Veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Ann Hui is slated to receive the esteemed Camellia Award at the 2026 Busan International Film Festival, an honor co-presented with Chanel. This recognition highlights her profound impact on the film industry and her unwavering dedication to portraying the human experience. The ceremony will take place on October 6th at the Busan Cinema Center, celebrating Hui's nearly 50-year career marked by a distinctive cinematic voice.
The 79-year-old director shared her sentiments, noting that while in earlier years she was reluctant to accept career-spanning awards, preferring to focus on future projects, the timing of this prize feels particularly apt. Approaching her eighties and facing new challenges in film production, she now cherishes such acknowledgments of her extensive contributions to cinema.
Since her directorial debut in 1979 with 'The Secret', Hui has helmed 27 feature films and two feature-length documentaries. Her work has been instrumental in shaping the Hong Kong New Wave movement, characterized by a commitment to realism and a focus on marginalized communities. Her filmography spans various genres, consistently exploring the complexities of everyday life without romanticization, from the plight of Vietnamese refugees in 'Boat People' (1982) to the nuanced family dynamics in 'Song of the Exile' (1990), and the dignity of working-class existence in 'The Way We Are' (2008), culminating in the poignant 'A Simple Life' (2011).
Hui's career is richly decorated with numerous accolades. She holds the record for most Best Director wins at the Hong Kong Film Awards, securing the prize six times, and has also earned three Golden Horse Awards in Taiwan. On two separate occasions, with 'Summer Snow' (1995) and 'A Simple Life' (2011), her films achieved a clean sweep at the Hong Kong awards, winning Best Film, Director, Actor, and Actress. In 2020, she made history as the first female director to be awarded the Venice Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, an honor she shared with Tilda Swinton. Earlier, in 2014, the Busan Film Festival recognized her as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year.
Established in 2024, the Camellia Award draws its name from the camellia flower, a prominent symbol of Busan and famously adored by Gabrielle Chanel. Previous recipients include Korean production designer Ryu Seong-hie, recognized for works like 'Oldboy' and 'Decision to Leave', and Taiwanese actress and filmmaker Sylvia Chang, who received the award last year.
Hui expressed her delight at returning to Busan, eagerly anticipating interactions with an audience she regards as one of the most discerning and cinematically knowledgeable globally. This year's festival will also fete Michelle Yeoh, who is named Asian Filmmaker of the Year. The 31st Busan International Film Festival is scheduled to run from October 6th to October 15th, promising a vibrant celebration of cinematic artistry.
