Ann Demeulemeester, an iconic fashion house known for its unique blend of romanticism and deconstructivist tailoring, is experiencing a remarkable resurgence. Under the astute leadership of CEO Claudio Antonioli and the creative vision of Stefano Gallici, the brand is deftly navigating the challenges of contemporary fashion. This revitalization is characterized by a strong emphasis on community building, a strategic approach to pricing, and a focused expansion into key global markets, all while honoring its rich heritage and captivating a new generation of enthusiasts.

The recent Ann Demeulemeester runway show in Paris offered a compelling glimpse into the brand's thriving subculture. Held in a Parisian friary, the event was a vibrant gathering of approximately 500 young attendees, all adorned in Ann Demeulemeester designs. The atmosphere, charged with husky rock music from the duo Beguiling Junior, underscored the brand's enduring appeal to a distinct, loyal audience. Notable figures like Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and punk icon Billy Idol graced the event, further cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon. As Julia Hobbs of British Vogue remarked, "This is such a scene," highlighting the immersive and authentic experience the brand cultivates.

Claudio Antonioli, the CEO and owner, elaborated on the intentionality behind this community-centric approach during an interview in Milan. He emphasized that creative director Stefano Gallici's talent extends beyond crafting distinctive collections; it encompasses fostering a profound sense of belonging among the brand's followers. Antonioli noted that this strategy successfully draws in a younger demographic who deeply identify with Ann Demeulemeester's world, while simultaneously retaining the brand's long-standing original community. This dual focus ensures that the brand remains relevant and deeply connected to its audience, transforming fashion shows into meaningful moments of shared identity.

Ann Demeulemeester, one of the famed Antwerp Six, was established in 1985 by Ann Verhelst (her real name) in Belgium. Alongside her husband, Patrick Robyn, who set aside his photography career to support the venture, she built a devoted following that celebrated the brand's distinctive romantic and deconstructivist aesthetic. Antonioli, a seasoned entrepreneur with diverse interests ranging from nightclubs to dog shelters, has a history of cultivating communities. Starting with his multi-brand store in Milan in 1987, he became known for championing avant-garde fashion and emerging designers, emphasizing the importance of investing in the next generation of creative talent.

Antonioli's strategic acumen is further exemplified by his role in co-founding New Guards Group (NGG) in 2015. This influential collective nurtured brands like Virgil Abloh's Off-White, Palm Angels, and Heron Preston, all of which leverage fashion as a powerful form of community expression. He recounted the organic rise of Off-White after an encounter with Virgil Abloh through Kanye West, illustrating how cultural relevance and strategic partnerships can rapidly propel a brand to global recognition. Following the lucrative sale of NGG to Farfetch in 2019, Antonioli sought a new venture that resonated with his personal passion for minimalist, dark aesthetics. This led him to Ann Demeulemeester, a brand he admired for its profound impact on fashion through its strong vision.

In 2020, eight years after Demeulemeester's departure from design, Antonioli took the reins with a clear objective: to rekindle the brand's original emotional resonance. His goal was not merely to replicate past successes but to recover its core identity and forge a new chapter that would captivate contemporary audiences without compromising authenticity. A pivotal decision in this endeavor was appointing Stefano Gallici as creative director in 2023. Gallici, who joined the Antonioli Group in 2019, was relatively young and untested but possessed an intimate understanding and shared values with the Ann Demeulemeester brand, a factor Antonioli deemed crucial for its evolution.

Antonioli attributes much of the brand's current success to Gallici's vision, adopting a hands-off approach that allows the creative team freedom while he strategically intervenes where needed. His "buyer's instinct" has proven invaluable in identifying commercially successful pieces, such as the popular Napoleon jackets, which sold out rapidly in limited editions. Despite their success, Antonioli resists solely focusing on high-performing items, prioritizing the team's creative direction over pure merchandising advice. This commitment to artistic integrity, coupled with market responsiveness, is yielding impressive results. The brand reported revenues of €20 million at the end of 2026, marking a 55% year-on-year growth, with projections of €27 million for 2027.

A key factor contributing to this commercial triumph is the brand's relatively accessible pricing strategy within the luxury segment. For instance, while a lavish fur coat might command $10,750, a basic tank top is available for $270, and the coveted Napoleon jackets range from $1,750 to $2,480. Antonioli deliberately positions the brand with prices slightly below other high-end labels, maintaining a respectful balance between luxury and accessibility, as evidenced by their $930 Vive 5-Pocket jeans. This approach has also resonated with celebrities like Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Suki Waterhouse, and Kylie Jenner, who organically wear the brand, further amplifying its reach without paid endorsements.

With product development firmly established, Antonioli is now channeling his efforts into expanding retail and distribution channels. The brand is strategically targeting Europe, Japan, China, and the United States, markets identified for their existing customer bases. Following successful store openings in Antwerp (2021) and Milan (earlier this year), Ann Demeulemeester recently inaugurated its Parisian flagship at Jardin du Palais Royal. This extensive 150-square-meter boutique showcases the brand's entire universe, including ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories, and even a tableware collection designed by Ann Demeulemeester herself for Serax. A London store is slated for early 2027, signaling aggressive expansion. Antonioli emphasizes that commercial growth must align with brand identity, stating that pursuing profit at the expense of authenticity would lead to ultimate failure.
