Amazon to Offer Trainium AI Chips to External Clients, Boosting Marvell's Role

Amazon is reportedly considering making its custom-designed Trainium AI processors available for purchase by external companies for integration into their own data centers. This strategic decision by the e-commerce giant could significantly expand the market opportunities for Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL), which serves as Amazon's primary collaborator in the design and production of the Trainium platform. The initiative suggests a shift in Amazon's approach, transforming an internal resource into a potentially lucrative external offering.

According to recent reports, Peter DeSantis, Amazon's AI leader, confirmed discussions regarding the external sales at the VivaTech conference held in Paris. While DeSantis refrained from disclosing specific potential buyers, the move is partly attributed to the escalating global demand for sovereign AI infrastructure. This demand is particularly pronounced in European regions, where regulatory frameworks increasingly mandate that data processing and storage occur within national borders. This emphasis on localized control presents a compelling reason for Amazon to make its advanced AI hardware accessible to a broader market.

The potential for this venture was hinted at earlier by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy in his April 2026 letter to shareholders. Jassy's estimation suggested that if Amazon's chip division operated as an autonomous entity, catering to both AWS and external clients, it could generate approximately $50 billion in annual revenue. This figure underscores the commercial viability and scalability of the Trainium platform, repositioning it from merely an internal cost-saving tool to a substantial commercial enterprise capable of addressing widespread market needs.

Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL) is a prominent semiconductor firm engaged in the development, design, and distribution of data infrastructure solutions. Its product portfolio encompasses custom silicon, networking processors, storage accelerators, and connectivity solutions. These offerings cater to a diverse range of sectors, including cloud data centers, enterprise networking, automotive applications, and carrier infrastructure markets, making it a critical player in the evolving technological landscape.

Amazon's consideration of selling its Trainium AI chips externally marks a pivotal moment for both the company and its partners, particularly Marvell Technology. This move could not only unlock new revenue streams for Amazon but also significantly enhance Marvell's market position, further solidifying its role as a key innovator in the semiconductor industry and a crucial enabler of advanced AI solutions worldwide.
