Acura Developing Larger Flagship Three-Row SUV
Acura is poised to re-enter the premium large SUV market with a new three-row model, reportedly larger than the current MDX, aiming to address consumer demand for more spacious third-row accommodations. This strategic move, detailed in a recent industry report, signifies a resurgence of previous ambitions that were sidelined during the 2008 financial downturn. The upcoming vehicle, dubbed the "Acura XL" in preliminary documents, is slated for production in late 2029 and will incorporate a new hybrid powertrain, positioning it to contend with established luxury competitors.
The concept of a grander, more opulent SUV has been part of Acura's long-term vision for some time. Initial proposals in 2008 for a range of new products, including a V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive platform, were unfortunately curtailed by economic instability. Among these shelved plans was a larger, three-row utility vehicle designed to surpass the mid-size Acura MDX and challenge other high-end brands. Now, it appears Acura is revisiting these earlier blueprints to bring a flagship SUV to fruition, as indicated by a report from Automotive News.
This forthcoming model, currently referred to as the "Acura XL," is designed to offer a more expansive interior than the MDX, specifically providing increased legroom in the third row. This enhancement is crucial for competing effectively with segment leaders such as the Buick Enclave and Lexus TX, both of which already offer superior third-row comfort. The new Acura is expected to distinguish itself further with a newly developed hybrid propulsion system, a feature that could give it an edge in an increasingly competitive market. While some rivals like the Lexus TX and Volvo XC90 currently offer hybrid variants, the landscape could shift significantly by the time the "XL" makes its debut towards the end of the decade.
Despite these promising developments, the project is still in its nascent stages. In the interim, Acura's vehicle lineup will temporarily be limited to three models, particularly during a two-year hiatus in the production of the RDX. The fourth generation of the RDX is anticipated to launch in 2028, featuring a comprehensive redesign and the same innovative hybrid powertrain destined for the "Acura XL." Honda and Acura first unveiled a glimpse of this future powertrain, alongside a revamped Honda Accord and RDX, in May. At that time, it was revealed that the new hybrid system is designed to cut production costs by over 30 percent and boost fuel efficiency by at least 10 percent.
Acura projects an annual production volume of approximately 40,000 units for this new flagship SUV. However, enthusiasts will need to exercise patience, as the vehicle's market launch is not expected until September 2029, when manufacturing is scheduled to commence. This long-awaited addition underscores Acura's commitment to expanding its luxury offerings and reinforcing its presence in the competitive SUV segment.
