AC Schnitzer, a BMW Tuning Icon, Announces Closure After Four Decades
AC Schnitzer, a legendary name in the automotive tuning world, is preparing to close its doors after nearly four decades of enhancing BMW and Mini vehicles. The Kohl Group, the parent company, has announced its withdrawal from the manufacturing of tuning components by the close of 2026, citing a challenging economic climate and shifts in market dynamics as key reasons for this difficult decision.
Established in 1987 by Herbert Kohl and Willi Lammert, the Aachen-based firm garnered a reputation for its sophisticated modifications that seamlessly blended aftermarket innovation with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) quality. Over the years, AC Schnitzer created memorable vehicles, such as the ACS3 Sport, derived from the iconic E30 M3, and the formidable V8 Roadster, based on the Z3 platform.
Managing Director Rainer Vogel highlighted several obstacles contributing to the company's impending closure. A significant challenge has been Germany's rigorous vehicle approval and certification processes, which impose lengthy testing and documentation requirements. These regulatory hurdles have hindered AC Schnitzer's ability to bring products to market as quickly as its international competitors, often resulting in missed business opportunities.
In addition to regulatory pressures, the company has faced a barrage of economic headwinds. Escalating raw material costs, unpredictable exchange rates, and disruptions across the supply chain have severely impacted profitability. The automotive industry's gradual transition away from internal combustion engines towards electric vehicles, coupled with changing consumer interests, has also played a role. Vogel acknowledged that the industry has struggled to ignite the same level of passion for performance vehicles among younger generations that existed in the past.
Looking ahead, the Kohl Group intends to concentrate its efforts on its core business activities: vehicle and motorcycle sales and service. While the manufacturing of tuning parts will cease, there is a possibility that the AC Schnitzer brand name could continue under new ownership. The company is currently engaged in discussions with interested parties regarding the acquisition of the brand, though the future form and scope of AC Schnitzer under new leadership remain uncertain.
For loyal customers and enthusiasts, there is some solace in the interim. Existing inventory of AC Schnitzer add-on parts, wheels, sport exhaust systems, and suspension upgrades for BMW and Mini models will remain available for purchase until the end of 2026, or while supplies last. Furthermore, the Kohl Group has affirmed its commitment to upholding all after-sales support and warranty obligations beyond 2026, ensuring continued service for its products.
