The 2027 Rivian R2 introduces a more accessible electric SUV option, echoing the distinctive design elements of its larger siblings, such as the unique pill-shaped headlights and structured bodywork. Starting at just under $47,000, this compact SUV offers an attractive entry point into the Rivian brand, with the price for the top-tier Performance model reaching nearly $60,000. While the initial release focuses on dual-motor all-wheel-drive configurations, plans are in place to introduce a single-motor rear-wheel-drive variant later, further broadening its appeal.
Key performance attributes of the R2 are impressive, particularly the Performance model, which boasts 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 3.6 seconds. The other all-wheel-drive variant, the Premium, provides a robust 450 hp and 537 pound-feet. Both models feature an 88-kWh battery pack, with an estimated range of up to 330 miles for AWD versions. Future RWD models are projected to offer a range between 275 and 345 miles, depending on battery size. Additionally, the R2 comes standard with a NACS charging port, providing convenient access to Tesla's Supercharger network, and supports CCS-type charging stations via an adapter.
Beyond its powerful electric drivetrain, the Rivian R2 is designed for versatility and utility. It offers practical features like a front trunk capable of storing a carry-on suitcase and a backpack, or up to six grocery bags. The SUV also features a rear window that rolls down, similar to the Toyota 4Runner, enhancing the cabin's open feel (a feature available on AWD models). With 9.6 inches of ground clearance, and approach and departure angles of 25 and 26 degrees respectively, the R2 demonstrates impressive off-road capabilities for its class. Customization options include multiple wheel sizes ranging from 19 to 21 inches, with Pirelli all-season tires standard and 20-inch all-terrain tires optional for the Performance model. The R2 Performance with the Launch package will be the first to market, followed by the Premium model, making the 2027 Rivian R2 a compelling new contender in the electric SUV segment.
